Zen-Inspired Kyoto Teahouse Experience at ION Orchard
‘Travel’ to Kyoto without being there? Ingen Kyoto is a new Japanese tea-specialty teahouse located at ION Orchard, Singapore.

Created by the team behind Hvala, it offers a tranquil tea experience inspired by Zen Buddhist monk Ingen Ryuki.

The interior mimics a Japanese tea room with shoji windows, wooden lattice sliding doors, tatami mats, and a range of seating options.

Offering about 200 Japanese tea options, each tea can be brewed three times for varying flavours.

They also have an ever-changing dessert menu which reflects the 24 sekki micro-seasons with ingredients that change subtly over time.

This teahouse also features a retail section showcasing Kyoto craftsmanship. Good to go if you are missing Japan loads.

From Taipei to Bugis: Louisa Coffee Launches First Singapore Store
Louisa Coffee, a renowned Taiwanese coffee chain, recently opened its first outlet in Singapore at Bugis, Guoco Midtown.

Known as Taiwan’s largest specialty coffee chain with over 500 outlets, it first started in Taipei in 2006.

The Singapore outlet features a spacious setting with both indoor and outdoor seating, and it offers a mix of signature and exclusive local menu items.

Highlighting beverages like Orange Peel Latte and Black Coffee Latte, the menu also includes a range of coffees, teas, sandwiches, and desserts like Boston Cream Pie in various flavours.

The Taro Pie ($6.50) was my personal favourite, sliced from a uniquely shaped Boston Cream Pie, resembling an elliptical orbit or a rugby ball.

This marks Louisa Coffee’s second international expansion after Thailand, signalling its growing global presence.

Birds of Paradise Gelato Boutique, a popular name among gelato enthusiasts, has recently opened a new outlet in Holland Village.

The gelato is served in either a standard cup or a unique crisp thyme cone, further enhancing the botanical theme.

In terms of pricing, a single scoop in a cup is priced at $5.50, with double scoops at $9. For those preferring the thyme cone, it’s $6.80 for a single and $10.30 for a double scoop.

Among their best-selling flavours, White Chrysanthemum stands out. It is infused with chrysanthemum and sprinkled with bits of cacao, creating a unique and floral taste experience.

Other intriguing flavours include Strawberry Basil, Earl Grey & Lemongrass, Lychee Raspberry, Pandan, Sea-Salt Hojicha, and Peach & Rose Sorbet, catering to a wide range of palates.

I tried the Macadamia Butterfly Pea, notable for its light blue hue. It combines the rich taste of macadamia nuts with the floral notes of butterfly pea flower, and a hint of blue salt, resulting in a nutty, creamy texture.

Caffeine Xpress, once a modest indie coffee shop nestled inside the famous Thambi Magazine store, has recently relocated to the new and bustling One Holland Village.

Despite its rather discreet original location, this coffee haven has managed to make a name for itself with its reasonably priced and quality coffee offerings.

The menu at Caffeine Xpress is straightforward and primarily caters to the take-and-go crowd. Coffee lovers can find their daily fix with a range of options like Espresso ($3.80), Long Black ($5, $6), White ($5, $6), Mocha ($5.50, $6.50), and Cappuccino ($5, $6).

In addition to coffee, Caffeine Xpress also offers a rotating selection of house-baked cakes, including Lemon Meringue Pie and Blueberry Cheesecake, surprisingly baked in-house by the owner’s brother.

Plain Meredith is a pet-friendly brunch café located at the brand-new mall of One Holland Village.

This café, a creation of the team behind Baker’s Brew, allows pets to dine alongside their owners. Named after the Welsh word ‘Meredith,’ meaning ‘Great Lady,’ the café’s ambiance is both indoor and outdoor, catering to different preferences.

Their menu includes classic brunch options like Breakfast Platter ($28), Steak & Eggs ($32), Eggs Benedict ($22), and, and various hearty meals like Plain Meredith Burger ($28), Asian Spice Chicken ($24), Grilled Barramundi ($28), to Crab Cakes ($20).

The café also plans to incorporate pet-friendly gourmet treats, making it an inviting spot for pet owners.

Beanfolks by Lemuel Chocolate recently opened at Jewel Changi Airport Level 3 terms itself as “Singapore’s first specialty hot chocolate bar”.

Created by the team behind Lemuel Chocolate at The Star Vista, the brand design is an eye-catching vibrant orange branding with enticing display of their chocolate beans.

A perhaps novel experience of customizing your own hot chocolate, there are several steps which give you total autonomy to make the hot chocolate of your dreams. Steps like, allowing you to choose a base from options like iced or hot chocolate, or mocha.

Then, you select from eight different types of chocolate, ranging from 30% White, 33% Caramel, 54% Milk, 85% Dark Chocolate, to 90% Ghana Dark. Continue on to a few other stages of the customizing journey and you’ll have in hand the cup of hot chocolate (or iced) to your delight!

Prices for drinks range from $7.50 to $8 each – with a choice of Mocha with coffee beans from Common Man.

Apart from the drinks, they also offer an array of sweet treats including Cookie ($5), Brownie ($5.50), and Canele ($4.50).

From its modest beginnings in 2015 as a stall at Seah Im Food Centre, Eat 3 Bowls 呷三碗 has steadily grown, now offering a full-fledged dining experience that captures the essence of Taiwanese night markets.

The latest outlet at Bendeemer is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate, decked out with Da Pai Dang-style mobile carts and a cinema entrance, creating a retro-style setting.

At the heart of their menu is the Eat 3 Bowls Signature Trio Combo ($16.50), a trio of Braised Pork Rice, Chicken Rice, and Oyster Intestines Mee Sua.

The Braised Pork Rice, in particular, is a standout, with pork belly that’s been simmered to perfection in a flavourful mix of soy sauce and spices.

The Oyster Intestines Mee Sua, with its rich, gooey broth and a generous serving of pork intestines and plump oysters, provides an authentic taste of Taiwanese street food.

For those with a penchant for snacks, the Salted Crispy Fried Chicken ($8.20) and Fried Oyster Mushrooms ($7.50) are not to be missed. These popular items, found in night markets across Taiwan, are replicated here with an airy batter and a unique spice blend that adds a subtle kick.

In addition to its coffee, Vernacular Coffee serves a variety of pastries, including classic, breakfast, and fruit danishes, as well as ice cream sandwiches.

The Cinnamon Pecan Bun and various Danishes like Scrambled Eggs & Spam, Avocado & Sour Cream, and Pulled Pork & Pickle offer pairings with the coffee.
