As Christmas 2023 is approaching, expect to see a new wave of cafes and eateries emerge in Singapore.

This November, as the cool breeze dances through the streets, check out these 10 new cafes (one with a new menu).

Be transported to a Finnish wonderland as you revel in its iconic designs in Marimekko Cafe and Common Man Coffee Roasters – both at ION Orchard.

There is the popular Korean coffee chain of Compose Coffee Singapore at Suntec City.

For something quieter, amidst the green tranquility of Dempsey Hill lies Bellerbys House; while Pelle and Pepe hides in the heart of Joo Chiat. Enjoy!

Butter by Two Men Bagel House
10A Exeter Road #01-02 Singapore 239958 (Somerset)
Opening Hours: 8am – 4pm, 5pm – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Bagelwich, Croissantwich And Pancakes At Somerset
A bagel cafe called “Butter” right in the heart of town?

Butter The Grease Station by Two Men Bagel House is actually found right next to Somerset‘s skate park within Trifecta – Asia’s first-ever snow, surf, and skate attraction.

Over here, they put a spotlight on three comforting classics – Bagels, Croissants, and Pancakes.

And true to its name, there is a golden thread tying everything together… butter.

For those keen to try Bagelwiches, there are the Sweet Chickens ($18) with fried chicken with sriracha honey butter; and Sup’ Beef ($20) included with hamburg au jus, sauteed mushrooms, sunny egg and more.

I saw “spam” and couldn’t resist. Loved the Poo Bear Bagelwich ($19), a mix of spicy peanut butter, spam, scrambled egg, pork floss, and garlic aioli. Promising place.

Marimekko Concept Store & Cafe
ION Orchard B1-12, 2 Orchard Turn, Singapore 238801
Opening hours: 10am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Famous Finnish Design Brand Opens First Concept Store & Cafe At ION Orchard
For fans of Finnish brand Marimekko, it has opened its first flagship store and café concept in Singapore, right at ION Orchard.

Originally blossoming in the 1950s, Marimekko charmed the world with its familiar, groundbreaking prints and palettes.

With cushions adorned with the brand’s iconic prints and a retail space seamlessly blended into the café, patrons are invited to explore and shop for a piece of Marimekko’s story home. Be it in the form of garments, bags, or household item.

Glancing through the display selection, I found the pastries such as Butter Croissant ($6.50), Pain Au Chocolate ($7.50), Almond Croissant ($7.50), and Kaya Croissant ($7.50) rather familiar looking.

For those desiring a more wholesome option, there are the Mexican Beef Pie ($11.90) and Mushroom Pie ($11.90).

In the sweet section, a selection invites a sugary exploration, with offerings such as Chocolate Praline Cake ($11.90), Chocolate Banana Cake ($11.90), Strawberry Cake ($11.90), Mango Mousse Cake ($11.90), and Tiramisu Cake ($11.90).

Modern Gourmet Rice Bar At Guoco Tower By Famous Bagel Shop
Recognised widely for their hearty bagels, Two Men Bagel House has ventured into another territory.

This is a “rice plate” concept, aptly named “Two Men Rice Bar”.

Tucked at Guoco Tower (straight out from Tanjong Pagar MRT), it can be a trendy spot that gives the humble “cai fan” a gourmet makeover.

At Two Men Rice Bar, the offerings range from Spam N’ Things, Bait Time, Mushy-Mushy, Happiness 2, Bebop, Gumbo No. 5, Black Rock.

No matter which plate you opt for, you will be treated to their housemade soup.

A “half tank” plate starts from $12, with the most pricy “full tank” priced at $20.

As for the base, you can select from Japanese short grain rice, a 16-type mixed grain rice, or the aromatic turmeric long grain rice.

Compose Coffee Singapore
Suntec City #01-623 Tower 3, Temasek Blvd, Singapore 038984
Opening Hours: 11am – 5pm (Mon – Sun)

Popular Korean Coffee Chain Opens At Suntec City
Compose Coffee is likely to attract both curious first-timers and those into Korean coffee culture. It is primarily a takeaway shop, though there are limited seats who those who intend to rest their legs.

Originating from Busan in 2014, Compose Coffee’s ethos lies in offering coffee that does not break the bank, and was lauded as the nation’s favourite coffee shop at the ‘2023 Korea’s Most Loved Brand Awards’.

Diving into its offerings, Compose Coffee Singapore showcases four signature items, including the Sangha Farm Ice Cream Latte ($5.80), Busan Sea Salted Cream Latte ($6.10), Grape with Cream Cheese Foam ($6.90), and K-Red Bean Milkshake ($6.90).

The cafe serves a medley of familiar coffee beverages at rather inexpensive prices – good for the office workers nearby to takeaway.

There are the Americano ($2.80), Cafe Latte ($3.90), Cappuccino ($3.90), Vanilla Latte ($4.80), and Hazelnut Latte ($4.80); while iced versions cost a $0.50 extra.

For those looking beyond coffee, the menu features a diverse array of other beverages, ranging from the Signature Milk Tea ($2.90), Taro Milk Tea ($4.90), to K-Strawberry Latte ($5.10).

Pairing with the drinks, Compose Coffee introduces its array of Croffles, which are essentially a merger of croissants and waffles.

Fame Coffee
108 Middle Road, Singapore 188967 (Bugis Junction)
Opening Hours: 8am – 6pm (Mon – Sun)

NEW Undiscovered Bugis Cafe With Big Space And Unique Lattes
Fame Coffee, comfortably situated at Middle Road, is just a short street across Bugis Plus.

Walking in, there is a gentle nudge of déjà vu, as the décor remains quite the same from when Mellower Coffee used to call this place home.

The space inside Fame Coffee is spacious for Singapore’s context. (There is even a Level 2, though it is out-of-bounds for now.) It promises a spot to stretch out and relax, away from the bustling street outside.

Navigating through the menu, you will find the ever-reliable Black ($5.50), White ($6), and Mocha ($7). I was recommended the Fame Blend, a mix of beans from Brazil and India, delivering notes of cashew, caramel, brown sugar, and a dark chocolate finale.

For the adventurers, there is a bit more to explore, such as the Dirty Chai Latte ($7) and Spanish Latte ($7). I was intrigued by a Singapore Latte ($8.50) that includes rose cream top, reminding one fondly of the sweet, milky Bandung drink.

Common Man Coffee Roasters – On The Go
Ion Orchard B3-27/28, 2 Orchard Turn, Singapore 237973
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

For Urban Bites & Coffee Break In Town
Making its mark at Ion Orchard B3-27/28, this “CMCR On The Go” concept is a primarily takeaway store by a pioneer in the specialty coffee scene.

First opened in 2013, you can find other CMCR outlets at Martin Road, Stanley Street, Joo Chiat, Quayside Isle and Alexandra. The Ion Orchard space is good for quick urban bites, though there are some seats around.

Coffee isn’t the only thing here. There are sandwiches such as Chicken & Bacon on Sourdough ($16) and Roasted Vegetable & Cheese Focaccia ($14) which offers medley of veggies and the rich creaminess of cheese.

Moving on to the pies and quiches, the Beef Cheek Pie ($9) has moist beef encased in a baked crust; or get the Smoked Salmon & Feta Spinach Quiche ($10) which is light and flaky.

A pit stop for both busy shoppers and those looking to unwind.

Tanglin Cookhouse – PLQ
Paya Lebar Quarter 3 #01-06/07, 2 Tanjong Katong Road, Singapore 437161
Tel: 6592 4572
Opening Hours: 9am – 10pm, Last order 9:30pm (Mon – Sun)

British Favourites In A Colonial-Style Setting At Paya Lebar
Tanglin Cookhouse is not quite your usual restaurant, serving up British-inspired fare with local flavours.

The success of the first outlet found in Tanglin Mall paved the way for an opening at Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ 3), allowing food aficionados in the East to relish in its contemporary British-Colonial cuisine.

A visit to Tanglin Cookhouse promises more than just a meal — it is an experience. The interiors of the restaurant subtly reflect hints of the bygone colonial era, expertly interwoven with modern design elements.

What also sets the Tanglin Cookhouse apart is its diverse menu, from breakfast, brunch, both Western and Asian-inspired mains, pasta to desserts.

The Salmon Wellington and “Sunday” Roast are recommended; while Crispy Hainanese Kurobuta Pork Chop is quite filling as it comes with Potato Wedges, Baby Peas, and Oriental Tomato Sauce.

If you prefer something lighter, try the Smashed Avocado Toast with Poached Eggs.

Bellerbys House
Block 75G Loewen Road, Singapore 248845
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 6pm (Mon – Fri), 8:30am – 5pm (Sat – Sun)

Dempsey’s Hidden Café With Raw Aesthetics And Serene Environment
Located on Dempsey Hill, the owner felt inspired by his time studying overseas at Brighton, and hoped that Bellerbys House would be a place where people can have good conversations and bonds.

Walking into the café, one can’t help but notice the raw aesthetic.

Exposed brick walls paired with cement-like floors and counters give it an unrefined, yet comfortable feel.

The menu is simple, offering a limited selection. Beyond the classic Kaya Butter Toast ($3.50), there’s an assortment of pastries. From the Butter Croissant ($5), Butterhorn ($6), Cheese Danish ($6), Pain Au Chocolat ($6), Raisin Roll ($6.50) to Almond Croissant ($6).

For the health-conscious yoga students around, there is also the Bellerbys Bircher Muesli ($5) with its mix of rolled oats, Greek yogurt, honey, and fresh milk, a choice for those seeking a lighter option.

I opted for the Mini Breakfast Combo ($15), a straightforward plate that included sunny-side-up eggs, smoked ham, chicken hotdog, wholemeal pita, and a creamy avocado mash.

Pelle and Pepe
83 Joo Chiat Place, #01-01, Singapore 427800
Opening Hours: 9am – 4pm (Thurs – Fri), 8:30am – 4pm (Sat – Sun), Closed Mon – Wed

Joo Chiat’s Hidden Plant-Based Bakery Cafe Gem, With Narrative Coffee Stand
Pelle and Pepe is a discovery for those who cherish authenticity and health in their food choices.

The café is not the easiest to find though, as it is tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood at 83 Joo Chiat Place.

To find it, make your way through the olive green door which promises a rustic and genuine experience, setting the stage for what’s to come.

The bakery’s commitment to a wholegrain-forward approach is commendable, evident in their use of natural ingredients and a steadfast avoidance of yeast.

The painstaking process includes combining stone-ground whole and wheat flours, using decadent Elle & Vire butter, and ensuring a slow proof over a long night.

Display bakes are rotating, and can include Fresh Mint Chocolate Cake, Sourdough Banana Loaf, Spiced Carrot Cake, Marble Carob Loaf, to Lime Yogurt Loaf.

For those who are familiar with Narrative Coffee Stand at Bras Basah, they have a counter here too for a curated coffee experience.

All day breakfast items include Breakfast Plate ($12.50), Eggs Benedict ($15) and Omelette & Rosti Hash ($11). Diving into their menu, the Breakfast Plate ($12.50) beckons as a hearty option.

Evan’s Kitch
City Gate #02-35, 371 Beach Road, Singapore 199597
Opening Hours: 8am – 5pm (Mon – Wed, Fri – Sun), Closed Thurs

Hidden Café Gem With Creative All-Day Breakfast & Brunch Items, Found At City Gate Beach Road
This is not exactly new, but Evan’s Kitch has a revamp of its menu with more exciting brunch and all-day-breakfast offerings.

Found at City Gate on Beach Road (near Bugis), Evan’s Kitch cooks up modern-Asian cuisine. The eatery has an extensive menu not quite like the usual, making it an ideal spot for those spontaneous cravings or relaxed brunches.

Though slightly off the beaten path at City Gate’s Level 02-35, it is worth the step taken to discover this cafe gem.

The man behind the culinary wonders is Chef Evan, with wealth of experience of more than 16 years from various hotels such as Goodwood Park Hotel’s Coffee Lounge.

A look at the mains, and you would find dishes like Sarawak Black Pepper Chicken ($17.90), Dong Bo Rou ($23), Lemon Butter Salmon Fillet ($25), Duck Leg L’orange ($26), Aburi Char Siew ($21), to Teriyaki Cereal Chicken Katsu Don ($18.90).

I would recommend the Mr Kakuni Toast ($19). Presented with 36-hour cooked pork belly slice coated with house-made char siew sauce, you also find scrambled eggs and floss on sourdough, amongst others.
