While the Old Airport Road area may be better known for its food centre, there is now a brand-new gelato cafe to look forward to.

Second Floor Lab Gelato at 32 Cassia Crescent is a new charming cake, cookies and gelato spot.

The unpretentious-looking cafe is found not far from Sweet Garden Dining Cafe, within a short stroll from Mountbatten MRT station and Old Airport Road Food Centre.

Wait, why is it “second floor lab” when it is found on the ground storey?

That is because owners Fiona and Wei Qiang had their journey beginning as home bakers on the second floor of an HDB flat.

This origin story is also reflected in the cafe’s design – spacious, encompassing about two shophouse units, and warmly reminiscent of a cosy living room with an adjoining kitchen.

Therefore, the cafe’s interior exudes a homely vibe, inviting you to relax and savour their offerings.

Their cake selection offers choices like the Seasonal Shortcake ($8.50) featuring light mascarpone chantilly, the Noisette Rocher ($8.50) with its rich layers of Valrhona chocolate mousse and hazelnut cremeux, and the Dill Cheesecake ($8.50).

I opted for the Coco-Fraise ($8.50) which was more unusual and reminiscent of a Lamington.

The square sweet treat combined coconut mousse, Thai basil strawberry compote, and brown butter lamington, with a mix of textures ranging from wobbly smooth to fluffy sponge.

Gelato is priced at $4.80 for a single scoop and $9.50 for a double, with an additional dollar for their more “creative flavors”.

Their range is interesting, spanning from the classic Kiddy Vanilla, Espresso, White Corn, Spiced Pear, Lemon Basil, to Ruby Peach.

There was even a unique Gochujang flavor with strawberry undertones, but I decided to leave that spiciness to some other day.

I chose the safer and festive-sounding Gingerbread gelato – tasting creamy and rich, with spiced brown sugar and housemade gingerbread complemented by an orange twist.

The waffles ($6) were not bad with balance between crispness and chewiness, forming a suitable base for their gelato.

Without the pressure of a highly commercialised type of environment, the cafe has a more relaxed and unhurried atmosphere.

Second Floor Lab Gelato is a charming spot that brings the comfort and warmth of a home kitchen into a public space.
