[Johor Bahru] SYST 深夜食糖 was recommended to me by my friends, because we were looking for supper.

The Hong Kong style café operates from 5pm to 2am, catering to those seeking late-night indulgences with a variety of offerings.

Located at Holiday Villa Johor Bahru City Centre (near KSL City Mall), it offers quite a wide array of desserts, snacks and drinks.

Getting there is not that direct though, as it is not connected to the hotel lobby, and needed some navigating from a different staircase.

Reviews online have been pretty mixed though, but we were hungry.

I think one major is the cafe’s décor which aims to transport customers to the streets of Hong Kong, with a 1950s half-century old dining theme.

It has got the feels.

The atmosphere provides a nostalgic vibes, and you almost feel like you are in Hong Kong with the Cantonese songs.

Sweet treats served include Sweet Potato & Yam Sago (RM9.50), Steamed Egg with Milk (RM9), Mango Shaved Ice (RM15), Rockmelon Sago (RM12), Avocado Sago (RM12), Double Layer Milk Pudding (RM9) and Lemon Grass Jelly (RM10).

One of the highlights at SYST is their Mango Pomelo Sago 楊枝甘露 (RM12).

The classic dessert had a smooth and rich texture from the coconut milk and sago, and was not too sweet and refreshing.

While it was not the best version I ever tried, it was good enough to satisfy cravings.

The Double Layer Milk Pudding (RM9) was a straight-forward creamy milk pudding, though it could have been more delicate and smooth.

One of the other highlights to me was Salted Egg Toast (RM12), with an eggy and buttery consistency on the outside and generously stuffed with sweet-grainy salted egg sauce on the inside.

A minor drawback was that the bread crust could be less oily.

The SYST’s Egg Tarts received mixed reviews when we shared those.

The crust of the tarts was flaky, but the custard filling could have a more custardy consistency.

SYST’s menu includes a variety of Hong Kong-inspired comfort food Curry Fishballs (RM10.80), French Toast (RM7.80), Crispy Prawn Toast (RM9.80), Fried Dumplings (RM10.90), as well as savoury dishes like Macaroni with Ham.

It is visit for those who appreciate late-night dessert places, and wish to enjoy a taste of Hong Kong in Johor Bahru.
