Hong Kong style Char Chaan Teng and cafes are getting more common in Singapore, with recent openings including Legendary Hong Kong at Funan, Pi Food at Penang Road, Tsui Wah at Jewel Changi Airport and Friends Cafe HK 朋友冰室 at Springside Walk.
The next will be a familiar name – So Good Char Chan Tang at 100AM Mall Tanjong Pagar, with the location right opposite its existing bakery.
They currently have outlets at Capitol Singapore, Midview City at 26 Sin Ming Lane, and TripleOne Somerset.
This cha chaan teng or Hong Kong-style café genuinely reflects the streets of modern-day Hong Kong and has been quite popular with local Singaporeans as well.
Chef recommended dishes include Curry Beef Brisket Rice, So Good All Day Breakfast, Baked Tomato Pork Chop Rice, Baked Cheese Spaghetti Bolognese, Fried Rice with Pork Chop & Eggs, and Rice with Bolognese Sauce & Fried Egg.
Also popular are the Hong Kong wok-fried specialty dishes such as Fried Hor Fun with Prawns in Scrambled Egg Sauce, Fried Hor Fun with Beef, Fried Hor Fun with Pork Ribs in Black Bean Sauce, Fried Rice with Minced Beef, and Fried E Fu Noodles.
For brekkie or a tea-time snack, try the aromatic Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk ($2.00). Pair it with Hong Kong-Style Milk Tea ($2.20 for hot, $2.50 for cold) for a classic rendezvous of flavours.
The Baked Egg Tart ($3.60 for 2 pcs) perhaps the most popular Hong Kong pastry, has delicately flaky tart filled with a silky-smooth egg custard.
Created with a recipe by Hong Kong chefs, the Polo Bun with Butter ($2.30) is good as a tea-time snack.
The outer layer is not as checkered as the usual, but the outer layer still had the crustiness and pleasant sugared-buttery layer. The inside texture was on the softer doughy side.
