Mui Kee 妹記 is a popular Hong Kong-style eatery located in Singapore that serves traditional Cantonese-style Congee.

Originally from Hong Kong, Mui Kee 妹記 has gained a following in Singapore due to its smooth and creamy Congee, alongside other Claypot, Noodles, Steamed and Side dishes.

The restaurant is located at Shaw Centre along Scotts Road, a prime location in the city.

Good news for fans: it is also opening a new outlet at Shaw Plaza Balestier, with the opening date to be 12 April 2023 (Wed).

From now till 12th May 2023, guests can enjoy a free upgrade to a set meal (includes you tiao, century egg and drink) with any a la carte congee order during lunch hours. For dinner, guests can look forward to redeeming a free steamed item or side dish with any steamed item or side dish purchased at Mui Kee Balestier for dinner.

The revamped Shaw Plaza contains a number of F&Bs such as Two Bake Boys, Collin’s, Picolino, Black & White, Koo Kee, Menya Aoi, Inochi, King Grouper Fish Soup, Xi Men Jie, and Ontama Don for you to check out.

I first tried Mui Kee Congee 妹記生滾粥品 in Hong Kong, located at Level 3 of Fa Yuen Street Market Mong Kok, and was impressed with the bowl’s heartiness and incredibly smooth texture.

The founder Mak Mai started the first stall in 1979; and the business is now taken over by third generation owner Choi Kok Tung or “Ah Tung”.

What makes each bowl of congee special is that it is prepared from scratch.

Regular favourites at Mui Kee include Garoupa Belly ($15.80), Sliced Beef Congee ($10.80), Homemade Pork Meatballs Congee ($10.80), while premium options include a decadent Alaskan Crab Leg Congee ($24.80).

They used to serve up Parrot Fish Belly Congee, but it seems to be removed from the menu.

The congee in particular is well-loved for a delicious smokiness with wok-hei; best paired with dishes such as Drunken Chicken in Shaoxing Wine ($12) and Poached Kai Lan ($10).

The Balestier outlet features an expanded menu of Hong Kong focused offerings such as Cantonese-style Steamed Baby Threadfin fish ($28.80).

There are also Baby Threadfin dressed with scallion ginger soy sauce dressing for a familiar taste of home and Steamed Pork Patty with Preserved Vegetables ($11.80), a well-loved staple comfort food for many Cantonese families – which is not available at the other outlet.
