This Hong Kong style eatery, established in 2011 by four gastronomic enthusiasts, originally hails from Malaysia and has now brought its distinctive cuisine to Singapore.

As soon as you step into Zok Noodle House 竹麵館 newly opened at Raffles City, you may feel being transported to the bustling streets of Hong Kong and Macau.

The authenticity of the establishment is reflected in its credo: “真材實料 · 足料呈現” – a commitment to using only the quality ingredients and generous portion sizes, staying true to the literal meaning of “Zok” – which refers to ingredients.

What immediately caught my attention was the range of dishes on offer.

If you are lost at what to order, the menu boasts of a Top 10 list.

It features diverse options like Pork Belly Noodles with Wine, Salted Egg Chicken Chop Rice, King Prawn Curry Noodles, Zok Noodle House Curry Noodles, Zok Noodle House Spicy Soup Pork Noodles, Seven Flavours Fried Tofu, to HK Style Milk Tea.

However, the crown jewel of their collection is arguably the Signature Fresh Prawn Wanton Noodle ($10.90) – available in dry or soup versions.

I also think the price range is reasonable considering City Hall area.

The wantons which hand-wrapped with 8 parts filling to 2 parts skin, offer a contrast of texture and taste.

They were plump, and surprisingly not bad – on par with some of the Chinese restaurants out there honestly.

The broth simmered for over 6 hours, captures the profound flavours of high-quality flounder fish, old chicken, shrimp roe, and fresh pork bones, resulting in a soup base that complemented the springy egg noodles.

The Zok Noodle House Guifei Soup Wonton Noodles ($15.90) also initially intrigued me, being exclusive to their Singapore outlet.

Unfortunately, I found the soup lacking in the rich depth of flavour I expected, and the noodles had a strong alkaline taste that overpowered everything else.

However, the side serving of pork chop was pretty tender and tasty.

If you find yourself at Zok Noodle House, my personal recommendation would be the Zok Noodle House Milky Soup Pork Noodles ($13.90).

It bore a comforting resemblance to our familiar Bak Chor Mee Soup, complete with a tantalising whiff of garlic in the milky comforting soup.

That said, the pork liver could have been a tad more tender.

For the spice aficionados, the Zok Noodle House Curry Noodles ($13.90) provides a welcome kick.

Paired with char siew and wantons, the rich curry gravy lent the dish an inviting heartiness, especially when you allow some of the tau pok to absorb the base.

To wrap up the meal, do not miss the Seven Flavours Fried Tofu ($5.50) addictive, crispy yet soft; and the Hong Kong Milk Tea, a creamy delight that nicely contrasts with the hearty meal.

Although some dishes may require fine-tuning and waiting times can be somewhat uneven (some dishes came fast, while others took much longer), there is no denying that the restaurant has a lot to offer.
