Taman Jurong Food Centre at Jurong West is more than just a collection of stalls serving delectable hawker food.

Its story began in 1972 as Yung Sheng Food Centre, but in 2005, a new chapter emerged with its re-naming as Taman Jurong Food Centre.

Despite its distance for many, foodies show willingness to travel long distances here, a testament to the experiences that await them here.

Spanning three stories with a wet market on the ground level, the hawker centre houses a medley of stalls.

Standouts include the sizzling BBQ Seafood, the unique treats of ButterNut, the comforting warmth of Yong Kee Claypot Bak Kut Teh, the traditional touch of Rong Xing Hakka Yong Tau Fu, and smoky flavours Xiang Wei Fried Kway Teow Mee.

I stay quite far from Taman Jurong Food Centre and so have yet to try out most of the famous stalls, but some day I will.

Check out these well-loved stalls from Taman Jurong Food Centre:

Feng Zhen Lor Mee 鳳珍鹵麵
Taman Jurong Food Centre #03-146
Opening Hours: 5:30am – 2pm (Tues – Sat), Closed Sun, Mon

People do travel all the way far-west to Taman Jurong Food Centre for this one stall – Feng Zhen Lor Mee.

Long queues are a common sight, but the efficient service is commendable. Try to avoid peak lunch time though.

There is both the basic Lor Mee and Fish Lor Mee included with fish flakes. There were so many toppings such as scrumptious deep-fried meatballs that the noodles weren’t even visible.

Here’s what I like about the Lor Mee: the gravy had good consistency, moreish with well-balanced flavours that went amazingly well with the tender meatballs.

Besides Lor Mee, they also serve fried prawn rolls which make for tasty appetizers to go with your meal.

58 Minced Meat Noodle
Taman Jurong Food Centre #03-150
Opening Hours: 7am – 2pm (Mon, Thurs – Sun), Closed Tues, Wed

58 Minced Meat Noodle started way by in 1973, now managed by 2nd generation hawker.

Here’s what worked about the bowl: Ingredients were generous, pork slices and liver were prepared just nice and tender.

Noodles were cooked more to the softer side. There were also sliced dry button mushroom included, which I feel could not absorb the sauces as well.

The base sauce was unlike others, more to the savoury-spicy side with a tinge of sweetish ketchup, and less of the vinegary element.

Tien Lai Rice Stall 天來飯店
Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre #02-66
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 1pm (Mon – Fri, Sun), Closed Sat

Located at the back of the food centre, it is not difficult to find a long line of hungry customers waiting for Tien Lai Rice Stall’s plates of tantalising roast meats on rice.

Try to avoid peak hour lunch as they may be busy preparing bulk orders for the workers nearby, and they usually sell out by mid-lunch time (say 12:30pm or so).

Plus, the items are all very affordable, with the Char Siew Rice, Roast Pork Rice and Soy Sauce Chicken Rice priced from $4.00. And in generous portion too

I would think the must-get here is the signature BBQ Char Siew pork, said to be prepared by the hawkers with the secret recipe, known for sweet and fragrant taste.

The Char Siew has a beautiful char and caramelisation – making it quite honeyed-sweet on the outside, with a succulent and part lean part.

Tom’s Kitchen
Taman Jurong Food Centre #03-130
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2:30pm, 5pm – 8:30pm (Mon – Wed, Fri – Sat), Closed Sun, Thurs

Tom’s Kitchen is a popular at the Taman Jurong Food Centre, not only for its tasty Western-style dishes but also for the substantial portion sizes offering great value for money.

Their diverse menu boasts a plethora of dishes, with most priced at $8.50 or below.

Some of their offerings are Grilled Chicken Chop, Grilled Fish, Grilled Salmon, Grilled Pork Chop, Grilled Sirloin Steak, Grilled Lamb Chop, Chicken Cutlet, Fish Cutlet, and Pork Cutlet.

The Sirloin Steak was a favourite, featuring thick beef slices smothered in a brown mushroom sauce, accompanied by a generous portion of coleslaw and fresh veggies.

The Chicken Chop was delightful with its crispy outer layer and succulent interior. Their fries came with a sprinkle of chipotle powder for an extra kick.

However, be prepared for a potential wait, as it can get quite lengthy at times.

Tai Seng Fish Soup 泰成魚湯
Taman Jurong Food Centre #03-145
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 8pm (Mon – Sun)

The Michelin inspectors recently awarded Tai Seng Fish Soup 泰成魚湯 at Taman Jurong Food Centre a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

But note that people often mix this stall up with Thai Seng Fish Soup at 3026 Ubi Rd 1. (They are not related.)

Four types of fish soup are sold here: Sliced Fish Soup ($5), Fried Fish Soup ($5), Mixed Fish Soup ($6), and Fish Head Soup ($5). Economical for what it is, but note that price differs depending on outlet.

Customers can also add on Fried Egg, Vegetables, Fish Roe, Beancurd and more Fish slices.

Start with the Sliced Fish Soup, filled with sliced fish, tofu, fried egg floss, tomato, and cabbage. If you want to feel fuller, add $2 extra for more fish.

I thought that the winning element was the fried egg floss which gave the dish a different texture and dimension.

Ang Moh Zi Char
Taman Jurong Food Centre #03-151
Opening Hours: 11am – 2pm, 6pm – 9pm (Thurs – Sun), Closed Mon – Wed

The interestingly-name Ang Moh Zi Char is an interesting find by the creators of ButterNut – also located at the same food centre.

What captured my palate was their Swiss-inspired Rosti, starting at an inexpensive $6.

For purists, the plain Rosti with a touch of sour cream is a treat in itself. The texture of their Rosti stands out — a harmony of crispy edges and a soft interior.

But if you are feeling a bit adventurous, you can elevate the experience with hearty toppings like rib-eye steak, chicken chop, Swedish dill-baked salmon, and grilled mushrooms.

However, their culinary prowess doesn’t stop at Rosti. Drawing inspiration from the owner’s Portuguese lineage, they serve a traditional turmeric-infused Portuguese Flavoured Rice.

And for those who love a cheesy twist, there’s an option to upgrade your meal to cheese baked rice.

Plan your visit accordingly, as they are closed from Monday to Wednesday.

Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker 新生五香虾饼
Taman Jurong Food Centre #03-163
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 9pm (Mon – Sun)

The dish of 五香虾饼 (Wu Xiang Xia Bing) or ‘Five Spice Prawn Cracker’ holds a special place – a medley of deep-fried goodness with varied flavours.

At Taman Jurong Food Centre, Xin Sheng Gor Hiong Prawn Cracker is where this hawker delight truly shines.

Spearheaded by Matthew Liu, a former national tennis player who traded his banking career for the sizzling woks, this stall is a testament to passion meeting tradition, as he takes on the mantle of the third-generation owner.

Visitors are greeted with an array of deep-fried options, each tantalisingly showcased in clear photographs with prices to match.

Popular items include the signature Ngor Hiong and Prawn Roll to the crisp Spring Roll and Prawn Cracker. There is also the soft Water Chestnut Cake, Sotong You Tiao, zesty Spicy Fish Ball, and the ever-popular Fried Chicken Wings.

With most items priced around $1.50, it’s a treat for both your palate and pocket.

But the experience isn’t complete without a serving of bee hoon, complementing the deep-fried treats.

Sikkander’s Briyani
Taman Jurong Food Centre #02-100
Opening Hours: 9am – 7pm (Mon – Sun)

Sikkander’s Briyani stands out especially for those on a budget. Their Chicken Briyani, priced at an incredibly affordable $4.50, is nothing short of a steal.

Unlike many others that tend to be heavy on spices, Sikkander’s version is mild and clean, catering to those who prefer a subtler flavour profile.

Accompanying the briyani are slices of pickle cucumber, adding a refreshing crunch and tang, and a side of aromatic curry gravy.

If you are looking to try out more, the stall also offers Nasi Briyani featuring tender mutton for just $5. There’s also Ayam Penyet, Roti Prata, Murtabak, and Chicken Rice to choose from.

Leng Huat Fishball Noodle.Laksa 龍發魚圓麵。叻沙
Taman Jurong Food Centre #02-89
Opening Hours: 6am – 2:30pm, 5:30pm – 11:30pm (Mon – Sun)

On the second floor of Taman Jurong Food Centre you would notice Leng Huat Fishball Noodle.Laksa that captures the essence of old school flavours.

Walking past, you may be drawn in by the perpetual buzz of a long queue, a clear testament to its popularity among residents nearby.

Whether you are craving their Fishball Noodles or the rich Laksa, you are in for an inexpensive treat with the bowls priced at modest sum from $4.

Dive into a bowl filled with four plump fish balls, sliced fish cakes, and a sprinkling of savoury minced pork, ensuring every bite is as delightful as the last.

It may be the taste that transports you back in time – a reminiscent journey to the flavours of yesteryears. The kind of taste that evokes memories of childhood visits to local hawker centres.

Leng Huat also stands out with its late closing time, catering to those late-night noodle cravings until around 11pm.

De Ji Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle 得记香港油雞飯.麵
Taman Jurong Food Centre #02-85
Opening Hours: 6:30am – 2:30pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

Catering to those with an affinity for Hong Kong noodle and rice dishes, this stall boasts a selection of dishes including the familiar Soy Sauce Chicken Rice, the robust Roasted Pork Rice, the smooth-textured Soy Sauce Chicken Hor Fun, and the ever-popular Char Siew Noodles.

A notable signature is the Hong Kong style Soy Sauce Chicken Noodles.

Priced reasonably from $3.50, the dish offers a taste that reflects its price point. The chicken stands out with its tender texture, having been braised to soak up the seasoning well.

The noodles were also the springy type, well-coated with a savory sauce.

For those in Taman Jurong looking for a quick, affordable, and straightforward soy sauce chicken, De Ji might just be the place to stop by.
