Wu Pao Chun Bakery has opened its 2nd Singapore outlet at Orchard Paragon, replacing where BreadTalk used to be.
Baker Wu Pao-chun 吳寶春 himself found fame when he won the Les Masters de la Boulangerie world-championship held in Paris.
He is known for created “Champion Breads” of Red Wine Logan and Lychee Rose Royal bread which included rose petals, dried lychees and millet wine.
These Champion Breads are not cheap comparatively though, with the Lychee Rose Royale at $21.80 ($14.80 for half), and Red Wine Longan at $21.80 for whole ($14.80 for half).
They are handcrafted in small batches, available only at specific timings.
The Red Wine Longan ($21.80) which is the best-selling bread in Taiwan incorporates fresh longan smoked over 6 days using a recipe accentuated with red wine, wheat sprouts and walnuts.
As for the Lychee Rose Royal ($21.80), the dough is said to be drunken overnight in an artisanal blend of lychee wine, black-leaf lychee and natural rose petals.
While the Red Wine Longan is the best-seller in Taiwan, the Lychee Rose appears to be more popular with Singaporeans.
All-time favourite breads to look out for include the Royal Mentaiko ($2), Garlic Unforgettable ($1.30), Chocolate OO ($2.20), Lava Moon ($1.70), My. Wiggly ($2.30), Curry Chicken Crunch $2.50), Pearly Galaxy ($2), Kaya Kebaya ($2.20) and Spicy Floss Taiwan Pancake ($3.80).
For the Singapore store, the team has developed and included over 10 kinds of regionally-inspired flavours.
Look out for the Hot Chicken ($2.80), Ah-Pollo ($2.60), Sawadee ($2.80), Spicy Tuna ($2.70), Spring Blossom ($2), Spring Dog ($3.80) and TomYummy! ($2.60).
One of my favourites is the Satay Satay ($3.50). Inspired by the Singapore hawker food, this is filled with satay chicken, satay sauce and cheese, topped with onions and peanuts.
Another is the Spring Blossom ($2) soft and chewy bun topped with spring onions and shallot oil. This simple bun ended up to be one of Singapore’s top favourites.
Quench your thirst with the Original Soy Milk ($2.80 for 300ml bottle) – with cold soya bean milk along with your breads to wind down the day.
