Along Amoy Street lies a new addition – The Fat Kid Bakery which specialises in Sourdough Donuts with luscious fillings.

The Fat Kid Bakery is no stranger to the scene, first starting as a HBFB (home-based food business) then a brick and mortar store in 2021.

Since then, they have moved to Amoy Street where they have been open since the third week of April.

The interior of the new Amoy Street store itself is clean and bright with its yellow painted walls.

Do take note, there is no sitting area, so customers will buy items off the shelves or pick up their online pre orders here to take away.

Fueled by the passion for making bread, the owner shared that she started the brand when the pandemic lockdown occurred.

The bakery also stands to prove that good things come from not working in silos – the owner mentioned she is thankful for her team, and also her dad who has helped on the finance side of business.

On the menu, you would find sweet cream-filled Sourdough Donuts which affectionately named ‘Bombos’.

Expect flavours like Classic ($3.80), Chocolate Mess ($4.50), Vanilla Creme Brulee ($4.50), Earl Grey Milk ($4.50), Blueberry Cheesecake ($5.30), Citrus Bomb ($5.30), Summerberries ($5.30), Seasalt Maple ($5.50) and Roasted Hazelnut ($5.80).

I ordered four sweet Bombos, and they were packed beautifully in a box.

The dough itself of the Bombo was light and airy with a big of that Sourdough tang. It was a delightful surprise as I was expecting a messy affair, but was easy to tear apart.

The Seasalt Maple Bombo ($5.50) was filled with sweet cream which had hints of maple syrup.

The saltiness of the sea salt gave a good contrast to the sweet treat which made it more enjoyable.

Next I tried the Roasted Hazelnut Bombo ($5.80) which carried extremely strong notes of hazelnut alongside light chocolatey cream.

As with the rest of the Bombos, the fillings were generous till they seemed to have no end. But not so filled that it was messy to eat.

For the Earl Grey Milk Bombo ($4.50), the filling included a rich and deep Earl Grey tea flavour.

All fillings are made in house, as with the doughs, but it made me think how much effort they have used to extract flavours from natural ingredients.

I also enjoyed the Citrus Bomb ($5.30) Bombo, which had a zesty curd as opposed to cream this time – refreshing, great for a post-meal dessert.

Not just the sweets. They have also extended their menu to include the savoury options like Spicy Egg Mayo ($6.50), Garlic Mascarpone ($6.50), Torched Mentaiko ($6.50) and Sour Cream & Onion ($6.50).

Out of curiosity, I also got a savoury option which was the Torched Mentaiko, and surprised how they torched the top of the Bombo, which gave the Mentaiko some aesthetic char.

I really liked this Bombo due to the taste and mouthfeel of the mentaiko and sesame seeds.

Their menu also include Brownies ($18 for small box, $32 for big box), Blackout Chocolate Cookies ($18), Chocolate Chip Cookies ($15), and Chocolate or Vanilla Eclairs ($28 for ten pieces).

On the drinks side (literally a different side) of the cafe, the coffee program uses Yahava Single Origin beans from Papua New Guinea.
