Do you like Pretzels?

If you do, there is a new player in Singapore to get your fix besides the well-known pretzel chain Auntie Anne’s.

These doughy delights are found at Pretzel Planet, the spanking-new Sengkang Grand Mall.

Their tagline is ‘Out of this World’, but don’t worry. You don’t have to travel inter-galaxies to find it. Just take the Northeast train line (purple line) and alight at Buangkok MRT.

The store is located on the first floor, easy to spot with its neon blue storefront.

The Pretzel menu is extensive, with prices starting from $3.90 per piece. Savoury flavours include the OG ($3.90), Garlic Parmesan ($4.90), Mentaiko ($5.50) and Pepperoni ($5.50).

Sweet flavours include Cinnamon Sugar ($4.90), Salted Caramel ($5.50), Cookies and Cream ($4.90), Strawberries and Cream ($4.90), Almond Crunch ($4.90), and Smore Supreme ($5.50).

Because I am a massive fan of the rich taste that mentaiko sauce has, I opted to try that.

The concept itself is pretty simple. The symmetrically twined dough bread is laid flat on the counter.

Then, the staff grabs a bottle of mentaiko sauce and slowly, methodically drizzles it over the bread.

A lot of control comes into ensuring that the sauce comes out in even, twirly layers, interlacing the bread in a lattice pattern.

It was almost hypnotic to watch, and the final piece was a beautiful orangey work.

Biting into the Mentaiko Pretzel, I could taste the subtly spicy kick of the sauce. This is a good contrast to the bread, which was lightly salted.

The overall taste sensation was a little spicy, a little salty, and all-round delicious.

I also went for one of their sweet pretzels to balance the salty flavours. Strawberries and Cream ($4.90) was my choice – the sparkly pink hues in their display picture were too enticing to miss.

The sweet pretzel did not disappoint, with lush strawberry cream mixed with colourful sprinkles.

Personally, I liked the sweet pretzel more. I thought the bread tasted less salty, allowing me to enjoy the sweet sauce. The strawberry cream sauce was also not too cloying, which is a plus.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try the slushie, as the slushie machine was not ready at 12 pm. So those looking to down their pretzels with an ice cold drink might have to head down only in the late noon.

Pretzel Planet is certainly a hot competitor to the ubiquitous Auntie Anne’s, with its wide range of flavours.

While there is no place to sit in the store, you can head to one of the marble sculpture seats scattered around the mall to relax and dine.
