In an instagram-world dominated by picture-perfect cakes and desserts, Uggli Muffins stands out — not for its aesthetic appeal, but for its embrace of the unconventional.

However, come October 10, 2023, Singapore may lose Uggli Muffins as it decides to shut the doors of its two outlets in Toa Payoh and Jalan Besar.

The owner, in a bid to keep the legacy alive, has been reaching out since May 2023 for someone to take over. While many have shown interest, a firm deal remains elusive.

Its roots trace back to 1969 with the Bliss Haven Restaurant, a humble tze char (economical food) hawker stall.

Evolution hit when the owner’s son, inspired by a passion for baking, embarked on a new venture in 2006.

Operating under the familiar “Bliss Haven Restaurant” signage, Uggli Muffins, although present since 2011, truly gained momentum during the COVID era, as social media users flocked to share their unconventional find.

At the heart of Uggli Muffins’ success is its owner’s dedication to creating a unique baking technique.

The result? Muffins that sport a crusty and caramelised top, accompanied by delightfully irregular shapes.

The brand’s name, playing on the word “ugly”, pays homage to its core philosophy: prioritizing taste over appearance.

The muffins priced between $1.40 and $1.70, boast a medley of flavours.

From the classic Chocolate and Blueberry to the inventive Shiitake Mushrooms & Herbs, there’s an Uggli Muffin to suit every palate.

I liked the initial crisp which gives way to a soft, moist core, with each flavour variant offering its burst of taste.

There is underlying hope that a discerning buyer might step in, ensuring that the Uggli Muffins story continues.

But until then, grab a muffin, or several, and celebrate a brand that dared to be different.
