Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre is one of those hawker centres I like to visit for its more rustic charm, and popular stalls such as the inexpensive Seng Huat Prawn Noodles.

Yuan Cheng Carrot Cake 源成菜头粿 is also one of those stalls that enjoy a steady, long queue; which I have visited a couple of times across the years (thus you would find some older photos here).

This stall run by Mdm Ng Guek Eng, has been delighting customers with its Chai Tow Kway for over 30 years, earning a loyal following.

Mdm Ng learned the art of frying Carrot Cake with chye poh (preserved radish) and garlic from her mother.

She uses vegetable oil for frying, which is a healthier choice and adds an egg to each serving, contributing to the dish’s richness.

Yuan Cheng offers both the White and Black versions of Fried Carrot Cake, still inexpensive at $3 a plate.

The radish cakes is on the fluffier and softer side, complemented by egg bits. I found the cake chunks well-sized, ensuring each bite is satisfyingly substantial.

However, some might find it missing a stronger wok hei – the smoky flavour imparted by a hot wok. (But I was okay with that because understandably the hawker was also trying to serve up as many orders possible quickly.)

The Black Carrot Cake was less crisp but more flavourful with the coating of sweet dark sauce, with an almost caramelised exterior that adds a depth to the dish.

I preferred the black slightly better. Or you can also request for a mixed yuan-yang.
