Hey Slow Joe is a new addition to the vibrant cafe scene in the Farrer Park neighbourhood of Singapore surrounded by a cluster of cafes all around.
As its name implies, it strives to be a coffee stop where customers can slow down and savour life, even amidst the bustling city.
It is a short walk from Boon Keng MRT station, though drivers may have a little trouble finding nearby parking spots.
Though primarily focused as a grab-and-go coffee place, the cafe offers a small dine-in space for three to four individuals, a cozy niche where friends can share a quiet moment.
For early risers, like myself, the 8am opening time (every day) is a welcome touch, allowing a serene start to the busy day.
The coffee menu at Hey Slow Joe is curated with a variety of favourites, from the standard Black ($5) and White ($6) to others such as Mocha ($7), Dirty ($5), Piccolo ($5), and Affogato ($8).
The choice of using a single origin for Sumatra is noteworthy, as many cafes in Singapore opt for blends. Prices are modest, with a cup of black starting from $5.
Besides coffee, the menu expands into a delightful array of beverages including Chai ($7), Hojicha Latte ($7), Chocolate ($7), and the intriguingly named Shu’s Brew ($8) a cold brew tea.
However, the standout is the Magic Joe ($6) creation that offers a refreshing blend of yuzu as its base, enhanced with sparkling tonic water and topped with a butterfly pea flower concoction.
The bluish-meets-yellow presentation adds to its charm, making it a visually stunning and tasteful experience.
For those with a sweet tooth, Hey Slow Joe provides a small selection of in-house baked tarts including a Chocolate Hazelnut Praline ($8)
The Lemon Tart ($8) deserves a special mention, as it beautifully balances tangy citrus notes with a buttery crust.
The tart’s vibrant flavour dances on the tongue, yet was not overly sour, leaving a refreshing aftertaste that lingers pleasantly.
On the savoury side, the cafe offers options like Chicken Mushroom Puff ($4.50) and Curry Chicken Puff ($4.50).
Surprisingly (because this is a small outfit), the latter was memorably with its nicely buttery and crispy pastry housing a flavourful and aromatic curry chicken filling.
Being a new establishment, Hey Slow Joe is still finding its rhythm. The staff seemed a bit careful (or should I say cautious), and I noticed that some items might arrive slower than others.
However, this minor flaw doesn’t detract from the overall inviting ambiance and quality offerings.
Hey Slow Joe is more than just a coffee stop; it is a reminder to pause and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
