Old Hen Coffee in the Farrer Park area should be a familiar name for café lovers in Singapore.

Nestled in the enchanting neighborhood of Farrer Park, it has been around since 2014 and has seen itself evolve while staying true to its coffee roots.

It has now introduced Poonsti – a new Rosti concept that promises to allure and satisfy Rosti lovers.

Rosti originally a Swiss dish, is primarily made of potatoes, shredded and fried until they form a crisp golden crust, with a soft and mouth-melting interior. Probably made more popular in Singapore by Marché Mövenpick.

Poonsti elevates this simple comfort food, offering five signature variations, each priced between $12 to $18.

The freshness emanates from the plate, with each Rosti batch made small, shredded and handmade, served from 9:30 am until sold out, with a walk-ins-only policy (no reservations).

During my visit, I was guided to try the Rosti ($18) with house cured bacon, fried egg, hot tomato jam, cream cheese, and pickled radish.

The bacon, thick-cut and lovingly marinated, was an experience in itself. The sweet marinate kissed the meat, enhancing the savoury profile while allowing the smokiness to linger.

The Rosti itself was indeed better than what many others offer.

The exterior was tantalisingly crispy, yielding to a soft, textured interior.

I also liked that the layer was thick enough, such that you could still throughly savour the natural taste of the potatoes.

The hot tomato jam added a zesty tang, while the cream cheese softened the experience with its rich creaminess.

The coffee options are a love letter to those who love artisan coffee.

They work closely with local roaster Nylon Coffee Roasters, and highly regarded overseas roasters Koppi Roasters and La Cabra Coffee,

Or you can always have one of their well-loved Cold Brews.
