Singapore renowned for its food culture, holds in its heart numerous cafes and patisseries vying for attention.

While the more prominent ones always find their space under the social media spotlight, there are others, nestled away in unassuming corners.

Rae Cafe at Desker Road, located near the lively Jalan Besar hood, is one such place. In fact, it is just across Berseh Food Centre.

Having opened its doors months ago, Rae Cafe continues to bask in relative tranquility.

Walking into the dine-in café feels like a warm embrace to a home – the environment exudes an almost tangible sense of welcome.

It is a place that doesn’t rush you; instead, it invites you to linger, to sit down with a freshly brewed cup of coffee or a pot of specialty tea, paired with a slice of their cakes.

Speaking of cakes, Rae Café aims to apply the Korean minimalist cake design – simple yet sophisticated, minimalistic yet rich.

Beyond their cakes, an assortment of tarts and other sweet delicacies are on display.

With each tart measuring 8cm, favourites include the Blueberry Elderflower, the zesty Lemon Passionfruit curd filling complemented by a torched meringue, and the sumptuous Mixed Fruit Tart laden with a vanilla pastry cream filling.

I was recommended the Tiramisu Tart ($8.90). Bite into a creamy world of aromatic espresso, with layers of coffee cream cheese and lady finger caressed by coffee fresh cream.

It was pleasant to have the feel of a tiramisu encapsulated in a tart.

While both tarts I had were good, I preferred the Calamansi Coconut Tart ($8.90) slightly more.

This longish-shaped tart had a slight tang of calamansi curd juxtaposed against the gentle sweetness of coconut almond cream, all rounded off with a velvety coconut mousse.

For those with a penchant for cupcakes, Rae Café has a rotating selection – Matcha White Chocolate, Blueberry Vanilla, and Strawberry Pistachio are just a few to name.

I treated myself to the Orh Nee Yam Cupcake ($3.50) The taro chiffon sponge was fluffy, as if you were biting into a cloud, with the richness of fresh yam filling in its core, and a soft dollop of whipped cream on top.

Their coffee is sourced from Brix Coffee, using an espresso single origin from Indonesia, a complex medley of flavour notes from yellow fruits and floral hints, to deep molasses and dark chocolate.

Rae Cafe is a reminder that often, true gems lie hidden, waiting to be discovered and savoured.
