It’s not surprise that yet ANOTHER cafe has opened at Jalan Besar, this time a gelato café – and the owners are new to the F&B industry.

Muted Gelato attempts to bring a unique take on gelato at 221 Lavender Street.

Its name reflects the shop’s philosophy – serving gelato that is true to its ingredients, without overpowering sweetness or artificial enhancements.

The interior reflects this too, with a color scheme that subtly hints at peach, salmon, and apricot shades.

The gelato flavors here are a testament to their commitment to natural ingredients, with options including Strawberry Cocao Nibs, Lychee Sorbet, Uji Matcha, Roasted Hojicha, Coco Mango, Hokkaido (Milk) Cookies, and Dark Chocolate Sorbert

Pricing at Muted Gelato is fair, with single scoops priced at $5 and doubles at $9. The premium flavours are at a dollar extra.

One of the stars of the menu is the Evergreen Sorbet, which is inspired by the Virgin Mojito.

The fusion of mint, lime, and cucumber may just create that rejuvenating experience, though I thought a minor tweak in the proportion with less cucumber could enhance the overall balance.

The Earl Grey Sakura is a flavour that I would recommend, also since I feel that new shops should have flavours that are unique and defines them better.

Its floral aroma and gentle, creamy texture would make it choice for those who enjoy subtler tastes.

The popular Sicilian Pistachio, while deliciously creamy and rich, could benefit from being less sweet, allowing its natural nuttiness to shine through more prominently.

(Though the owner did mention some customers thought that their gelato was not sweet enough – always tough to find that middle ground for newcomers.)

Alongside gelato, the shop serves coffee sourced from Liberty Coffee.

The Latte ($7) though good, could do with a slight price reduction to make it more appealing, considering the cup size and competition in the area.

Muted Gelato’s focus on natural flavours is commendable. Open from noon to midnight almost every day (except Sundays), it can be a lovely spot for anyone looking to indulge in freshly made gelato.
