Singaporeans are always on the lookout for authentic Thai food, and here’s one hidden in the heartlands of Ang Mo Kio.

Ying Thai was previously located near River Valley at Indus Road, but has shifted within a coffeeshop found at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

Note: this is not to be confused with the Michelin Bib Gourmand listed Yhingthai Palace Restaurant at Purvis Street.

The chefs specialises in authentic home-cooked Chiang Mai cuisine, so you would find their dishes fragrant and flavourful.

For something light to start off the meal with, there are the Mango Salad ($5.50), Fish Cake ($5.50), Prawn Cakes ($7), Mini Spring Roll ($6.50), and Moo Ping ($6).

The usual Thai staples are available to bring up the heat, from Tom Yum Soup ($6 for chicken, $7 for seafood), Green Curry ($6, $7), Thai Fried Rice ($5.50, $7), Pineapple Fried Rice ($5.50, $7), to Basil Rice ($6 for pork or chicken, $7 for beef).

For noodle dishes, there are the Pad Thai ($7), Pad Sil Yew ($5.50), Stir-Fried Glass Noodles ($5.50) and Thai Noodle Soup ($6, $7).

I was initially quite surprised at the quality of the Green Curry ($6) when I first tried – rich and deliciously creamy, not losing out on the authenticity factor.

While Green Curries are typically a hit or miss in Singapore (sometimes too diluted or not punchy enough), this packed in the spice but didn’t overwhelm.

What I enjoyed was the gravy which was rich enough, with spices that provided a warming heat that was balanced by the creaminess of the coconut milk.

The chicken chunks added tender and meaty texture making the dish so comforting to have, best to go with Thai white rice.

Both the Thai-styled Pork Basil Rice ($6) and Phad Thai ($7) used Thai herbs and spices, and I reckon the standard is actually better than some of the established Golden Mile type restaurants.

Quite a hidden gem.
