Upon entering Shaw Plaza in Balestier, one might stumble across Pan Fresco, which is right next to the escalator on Level 2.

A term which translates to ‘fresh bread’, this relatively unassuming bakery cafe is operated by the team behind Bread Fresh.

It is a neighbourhood bakery brand that has made its mark with outlets in Yishun Ring, Boon Lay Place, and Wisteria Mall.

The interior of Pan Fresco is compact and understated, accommodating patrons with a small seating area of three tables.

The size, however, does not diminish the vast selection of baked goods on offer.

The shelves and counters are lined with a variety of breads, danishes, tarts, and sliced cakes, catering to the diverse tastes of its clientele.

A particular highlight of their collection are the croissants, priced between $3.80 to $5.80.

These pastries caught the eye not only for their larger-than-usual sizes, golden-brown sheen but also for their variety of flavours.

These include Pistachio, Hazelnut Chocolate, and Kaya Butter.

Having opted for the Ham & Cheese with Salted Egg Sauce Croissant ($5.80), I was met with an interplay of flavors.

The buttery layers of the croissant melded seamlessly with the savory ham, punctuated by richness of the salted egg sauce. Though I wished the salted egg sauce to be more distinct for this to be more memorable.

Alongside the croissant, a recommendation led me to sample the Kougin Amann.

This pastry, often a litmus test for a bakery’s prowess, showcased a caramelised exterior that offered a subtle crunch and a soft, layered inside.

It wasn’t like the usual Kougin Amann elsewhere – smaller in size, but decent for its price.

For those inclined towards beverages, there are the usual coffee drinks on the menu.

The cold brew sparkling teas introduce a refreshing twist. The combination of Earl Grey Lavender with Strawberry provided a balanced blend, where the robust character of the tea was uplifted by the delicate aroma of lavender and the brightness of strawberries.

Similarly, the Osmanthus Sencha paired delightfully with the tropical notes of passionfruit.

The bakery cafe emerges as a reliable spot for baked goods with reasonable pricing in the heart of Shaw Plaza.
