Golden Mile Food Centre at Beach Road has always been one of my favourite hawker centres, as there is always something (new or old) to discover there.

86 Lor Mee is one such gem.

Located at stall number 86 on the upper level of the food centre , this eatery specialises in a comforting, hearty Lor Mee.

Lor Mee is a traditional Chinese Hokkien noodle dish that consists of thick, flat yellow noodles (or kway teow, bee hoon) served in a thick, savoury gravy.

The dish is typically garnished with various ingredients, and what sets it apart is the rich and flavorful gravy that coats the noodles.

One of the appealing aspects of 86 Lor Mee is its affordability, with prices starting at just $4.

However, what truly sets this stall apart is its diverse toppings.

In addition to the classic Lor Mee, they offer interesting variations that include homemade Ngoh Hiang, Fried Prawn, Fried Chicken, and Fried Fish.

During my visit, I decided to try the Signature Lor Mee ($6, $7), which is available in two sizes.

It also comes with a side serving of Ngoh Hiang, Fried Prawn, Fried Chicken Cutlet, Fried Fish, and Fried Wanton.

One notable aspect of 86 Lor Mee is how they serve the fried items separately from the noodles and gravy.

This prevents the fried components from becoming soggy, allowing customers to dip them into the think gravy at their own discretion.

Among the fried items, I particularly enjoyed the fried chicken cutlet. Its crispy exterior gave way to tender and flavourful meat.

The Ngoh Hiang was also not the starchy sort, and packed with meat and water chestnuts – you can tell it is ‘homemade’.

As for the gravy, it was thick and had a pleasing consistency, not overly starchy. The aroma of the five-spice powder infused in the gravy was evident.

To enhance the dish further, diners can help themselves to vinegar, chili padi, and minced garlic provided on the side.

The chili had a spicier kick than I expected. Quite ‘shiok’. But I recommending having the gravy on its own first before mixing the other condiments in.

Generous portion of Lor Mee offered for just $6 – a fulfilling hawker dish indeed.
