For first-time tourists visiting Singapore, I would always recommend Arab Street – the vibrant and culturally rich neighbourhood near Bugis.

It is a destination for those looking to explore the Singapore diverse heritage and experience a unique blend of Arab, Malay, and Muslim cultures.

And a must-have drink there is the “Teh Tarik” or “pulled tea”.

Teh Tarik is a popular drink made with black tea and condensed milk, prepared by skillfully pouring and “pulling” the tea to create frothy, aromatic goodness.

Tarik at 92 Arab Street, founded by Ali ‘Sheikh’ Redha a former flight attendant, originally started as a smaller kiosk.

It has since upgraded to a larger space to cater to its growing popularity, and also become a well-loved photo-spot.

Do note that Tarik currently does not offer dine-in seating due to regulatory restrictions, but it does provide a few benches for customers to enjoy their drinks.

The shop is well-known for its range of freshly-brewed beverages like Teh Tarik ($2.20), Teh Halia ($2.70), and Saffron Iced Milk Tea ($3.80) prepared with spices.

There are also other variations such as Teh Tarik Pandan ($3), Teh Tarik Pudina which is Mint Milk Tea ($3.20); Chai and Coffee.

The tea recipes are said to be inspired by both Singaporean Teh Tarik and Masala Chai from the owner’s travels in India and the Middle East.

I found the tea smooth, with balanced use of condensed, evaporated, and UHT milk – not too sweet.

However, it could have been frothier for a better mouthfeel.

In addition to beverages, Tarik offers a variety of snacks and light bites.

Their menu includes Toast with kaya or Nutella, Roti Bakar ‘Burger’, Epok Epok (sardine and potatoes), and Samosas.

While I found the snacks on the average side comparatively (because there are many good shops in the vicinity), the whole vibes and tasty Teh Tarik and other drinks make it a to-visit spot at Arab Street.

Craving for a cup now.
