For fans of Finnish brand Marimekko, it has opened its first flagship store and café concept in Singapore, right at ION Orchard.
Originally blossoming in the 1950s, Marimekko charmed the world with its familiar, groundbreaking prints and palettes.
The Unikko poppy print, a notable symbol of independence, punctuated Marimekko’s designs, weaving itself into the very fabric of the brand’s ethos.
The Orchard Road café emerges as an extension of this vibrant design.
With cushions adorned with the brand’s iconic prints and a retail space seamlessly blended into the café, patrons are invited to explore and shop for a piece of Marimekko’s story home.
Be it in the form of garments, bags, or household item.
Glancing through the display selection, I found the pastries such as Butter Croissant ($6.50), Pain Au Chocolate ($7.50), Almond Croissant ($7.50), and Kaya Croissant ($7.50) rather familiar looking.
I skipped having them this time as their appearance suggests a commonality with pastries from other cafés (one in exactly the same mall). Okay, next time.
For those desiring a more wholesome option, there are the Mexican Beef Pie ($11.90) and Mushroom Pie ($11.90).
In the sweet section, a selection invites a sugary exploration, with offerings such as Chocolate Praline Cake ($11.90), Chocolate Banana Cake ($11.90), Strawberry Cake ($11.90), Mango Mousse Cake ($11.90), and Tiramisu Cake ($11.90).
The Dark Chocolate Tart ($12.90) promised a rich, velvety cocoa experience.
A fork through it reveals a slightly crumbly base, intertwining bittersweet chocolate notes.
I guess people are really here to experience the “Marimekko” design and vibes, more than just for the food.
On a personal note, I thought it was wasted opportunity not to have more Finnish elements in its menu. It’s still a lovely place.
