Dempsey Hill, once a British army barracks, has transformed over the years into a tranquil urban oasis.

Nestled amidst lush greenery, the Dempsey enclave brims with upscale restaurants, trendy cafes, and artisanal boutiques.

I happened to come across Bellerbys House at Block 75G Loewen Road, quietly nestled next to a yoga studio, surrounded by serene environment.

Quite near the Museum of Ice Cream as well, if you need some orientation.

The cafe is quite under the radar. Perhaps also because ‘Bellerbys’ may remind people more of educational institutions.

It is so named because the owner was inspired by his time studying overseas at Brighton, and hope that Bellerbys House would be a place where people can have good conversations and bonds.

Walking into the café, one can’t help but notice the raw aesthetic.

Exposed brick walls paired with cement-like floors and counters give it an unrefined, yet comfortable feel. This design, juxtaposed with the surrounding greenery, offers cafe-goers a blend of nature and modernity.

The menu is simple, offering a limited selection.

Beyond the classic Kaya Butter Toast ($3.50), there’s an assortment of pastries. From the Butter Croissant ($5), Butterhorn ($6), Cheese Danish ($6), Pain Au Chocolat ($6), Raisin Roll ($6.50) to Almond Croissant ($6).

For the health-conscious yoga students around, there is also the Bellerbys Bircher Muesli ($5) with its mix of rolled oats, Greek yogurt, honey, and fresh milk, a choice for those seeking a lighter option.

I opted for the Mini Breakfast Combo ($15), a straightforward plate that included sunny-side-up eggs, smoked ham, chicken hotdog, wholemeal pita, and a creamy avocado mash.

Paired with a choice of beverage, it offered a well-rounded start to my day. While the meal was basic and easily assembled, it was satisfying nonetheless.

As for beverages, beyond the traditional Black ($5) or White coffee ($5.50), a few different offerings caught my eye.

The Dirty Matcha, Pandan Latte, and Lemongrass Latte are intriguing deviations from the usual café menu, each priced at $6.50.

Bellerbys House with its raw aesthetics, concise menu, and serene ambiance, provides a retreat from the hustle and bustle – if you are looking for a quiet spot for coffee.
