Japanese-style Sandos were trending in Singapore for a while some time back.

The attention to detail in preparation, from perfectly sliced, high-quality bread to artistically layered fillings, makes them visually appealing and Instagram-worthy.

I remember trying Ebisu Sando Kyoto at Takashimaya Food Hall during a pop-up earlier this year, and it has finally opened a permanent spot at basement two.

The store specialises in Japanese-style sandwiches aka ‘Sandos‘.

While I would imagine some TikTok videos could describe Ebisu Sando Kyoto as “famous”, I cannot quite verify that.

The takeaway kiosk is designed for catering primarily to shoppers seeking a ‘quick’, gourmet bite.

I put ‘quick’ because while there are cold deli-style sandwiches which you can take-and-go; though the hot sandwiches are prepared freshly upon order and would require at least a 5 minutes’ wait or so.

On the menu sando choices of Ebisu Pork Cutlet ($16), A5 Japanese Wagyu Karubi Roast Beef ($28), Japanese Wagyu Minced Beef Cutlet ($18.50), Chicken Cutlet ($13.80), Shrimp Cutlet ($13), Fish Fry ($16) to Japanese Egg Omelette ($12.80).

I previously tried the Ebisu Pork Cutlet Sando ($16), included with deep-fried breaded pork cutlet, enriched with Tonkatsu sauce and shredded cabbage.

What I found was despite packing it home, the pork cutlet remained relatively crispy exterior and succulent. Not too dry at all.

The tonkatsu sauce added this sweet, gingery, and tangy note.

This time I had the Chicken Cutlet Sando ($13.80), and the pieces remained crisp while the meat was quite flavourful.

The bread used can be described as soft, fluffy, and light, providing a balance to the hearty fillings without overwhelming them.

Also available are “Soup of the Day” ($3.80, $3 with combo) ranging from corn, mushroom, curry or lobster bisque.

Although the bisque had a somewhat thinner consistency than I prefer, it was nevertheless brimming with the quintessential flavours that define a classic bisque – with a deep, layered seafood-infused taste.

Ebisu Sando Kyoto is made fresh and has good quality, though pricing is on the premium side, and I did wonder if they entered the Singapore market slightly late.
