Penny University is considered one of the ‘OGs’ when it comes to third-wave coffee shops in Singapore, and it has recently expanded its presence to a new location at Wisma Geylang Serai.

There is another outlet at Jalan Klapa near Bugis.

The name “Penny University” harks back to the 18th-century coffeehouses in England, which were often referred to as penny universities due to the wealth of information and discussion that could be had for the price of a cup of coffee.

This backdrop sets the tone for what the café aims to offer: a place of gathering, conversation, and quality coffee.

Wisma Geylang Serai is known for being a vibrant, culturally rich hub, making it quite an ideal setting for a café like Penny University.

One of the standout features of Penny University is its selection of coffee, offering choices such as White ($4.50, $5, $6), Long Black ($5), Piccolo ($5.50) and Mocha ($6).

For something more special, there are the Spiked Muddy with Gula Melaka ($6), Muddy Espresso with ice-cold milk ($6.50) and Jaffa Mocha ($7) which incorporates orange.

The café uses “Puma Estate” beans sourced from Finca Manantiales in Colombia.

These beans are notable for their rich and complex profile, boasting flavours of tropical fruits, caramel, macadamias, and tangerine, all culminating in a silky body.

As this outlet is still at the soft launch phase, Penny University also offers a small selection of pastries and cakes.

As of now, their cupcake lineup ($4 each) offers options like Teh Tarik, Cinnamon Butterscotch, Chocolate Speculoos Pop Rocks, Lemon Meringue, Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, Horlicks, and German Chocolate.

Good to see that they blend familiar local flavours with classic favourites.
