[Penang] Toh Soon Cafe known for its traditional Penang breakfast culture, may be ‘hidden’ between alleys, but has become very popular among tourists.

Once on Campbell Street, look for the narrow alley where Toh Soon Cafe is tucked away.

The breakfast is quite popular, so you can also ask locals for directions, as most are familiar with this well-known spot.

The cafe’s charm lies in its simplicity and authenticity.

The setting is modest – a few tables and chairs spread across a narrow alley, overshadowed by old buildings.

It feels like a step back in time – and reminded me of my childhood places.

Now, some may tell you to go only if there is no queue, because the system can be ‘chaotic’.

The service is straightforward, focused more on delivering the food than on pleasantries.

As to how long you have to wait… depends on your luck.

Food items include Egg on Toast (RM6.40), Half Boiled Egg (RM2.40), Nasi Lemak (RM2) and Roti Kok (RM2.50) – which is a packet of ‘bread biscuits’.

But of course, one of the main attractions at Toh Soon Cafe is the charcoal-toasted bread (from RM4).

There are options of Whole Wheat, Coffee, Chocolate, Black Charcoal Sesame, to even Polo Bun.

I had the Roti Kiap (RM4.40), which the boss (seemed like it) mentioned the bread would be thinner and crispier. Sounds good.

The process of toasting the bread over charcoal adds a distinct smokiness and crispness that you don’t get in conventional toasters.

The toast is then generously slathered with homemade kaya.

It is worth noting that while the toast was good, it might not completely live up to the hype and long wait times for some.

The Hainanese coffee (from RM1.5) to me was the highlight of Toh Soon Cafe.

My Kopi O was well-brewed, smooth, fragrant, and not too bitter.

Toh Soon Cafe is more about the old-school vibes, and enjoying the simpler things in life in an environment that steeped in history and tradition.
