[Penang] The former shipping yard building houses one of the most popular cafes in Penang.

Norm Micro Roastery attracts cafe hoppers and instagrammers with a penchant for good coffee and photos.

Tucked away in a location where its entrance and interior are not immediately visible from the outside, it is a place that might be easily missed by those just walking around George Town (near the Business district).

In fact, it looked closed when I saw it from the outside.

However, its reputation as one of Penang’s hottest cafes post-MCO (Movement Control Order) speaks volumes about its allure.

Part of the reason for its prominence is that it is part of a brand that includes Norm Café, which focuses on coffee, and Noct, known for its cocktails.

The most prominent element of the café is its location inside a vast shed with a high-slanted roof, oversized doors and windows, and a skylight letting in plenty of rays during the day.

Primarily done in softer tones, the odd plant in the room adds a hint of colour.

The central table and bench that snakes around the courtyard, surrounded by smaller seating spots, is another feature that gives the place a distinct identity.

It is not difficult to understand why it is appealing spot for regular cafe hoppers, Instagram enthusiasts, coffee aficionados, and even pet parents.

Moreover, Norm Micro Roastery excels in its gastronomic presentations that alternate between comfort food and fine-dining breakfast creations.

Egg lovers can order the Norm Essential (RM22.90) with choice of eggs on sourdough, pear and salad drizzled with extra virgin olive oil; and Norm Baked Eggs (RM35.90) in house-made organic Italian tomato sauce.

There are also the Duck Benedict with Tom Yum Hollandaise (RM28.00), and drool-worthy Chicken Karaage Burger (RM32.00) for something more filling and crunchier.

I ordered the Smoked Chilli Jam with Scrambled Eggs (RM28.90) which comes in two variations: Mushroom and Bacon.

Was more attracted to the Mushroom variation, and there were sautéed which complemented the soft creamy eggs well.

The smoked chilli jam added a subtle heat that elevated the dish without overpowering it.

Desserts look equally enticing.

The towering Citrus Passion (RM28.90) featuring waffles with grapefruit, passionfruit honey curd, orange, kanten jelly, and signature Earl Grey ice cream is one of the main show-stoppers.

The 24-hour proofed buttermilk waffle was the base – crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Was quite intrigued by the many other components – the tartness of the grapefruit, the sweetness of the passionfruit honey curd, and the freshness of the orange slices.

There was also kanten jelly which added a wobbly textural element, and the signature Earl Grey ice cream was rich, fragrant and creamy.

Drinks at the Norm Micro Roastery take on a bold and flavourful persona.

Among the signature offerings you might want to try are Coconut Latte – espresso and coconut milk, Smoky Grapefruit (RM14.00), and Matcha Yuzu (RM15.00).

Norm Micro Roastery is a place that should be on your radar when visiting George Town.
