[Penang] Down to earth, authentic, and without any fuss, My Own Cafe, located behind Yap Kongsi near Armenian Street, may not stand out in appearance.

Its homely and straightforward interiors, consisting of basic wall art and decorations, are devoid of any pomp and glamour.

The stairs leading up to a retail shop and tattoo parlour may make you stop and wonder if you are in the right place.

But fear not, My Own Cafe is nothing short of a local culinary institution and arguably serves one of the best Penang Assam Laksas in George Town.

It is often described as a great place for a first meal in George Town, especially for those new to Malaysian cuisine.

The owners are known to be friendly service, offering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Side note: it is near the famous Penang street art such as “Boy on Chair” and “Little Children on a Bicycle” (further walk away).

Recent recipient of the Michelin Bib Gourmand, the family-run shop is famous for its Penang Assam Laksa (RM8.00), Nyonya Laksa (Fridays only), Mix Laksa (RM9.00), and Fried Spring Rolls (RM9.00 for 6 pcs).

The Assam Laksa shines for its light character, underscored by a balanced sweet, sour, and spicy taste.

The fish-based noodle soup boasted a deep red colour and distinctly tangy flavour derived from assam (tamarind).

At the same time, the fresh mackerel, galangal, lemongrass, and various herbs gave the broth a sense of refinement.

Finally, the mint and pineapple toppings conjure up gastronomic magic, adding a hint of tropical exoticness to the creation.

The Assam Laksa can be described as having an “old-grandma taste,” indicating a rich, authentic flavour profile that has been maintained over time.

I found it slightly on the spicy side, and might have distracted some from the overall balance.

Equally notable is the cafe’s Nyonya Laksa, a beautiful fusion of Chinese, Malay, And Indian ingredients, highlighting the diversity of Nyonya or Peranakan cuisine.

Similarly, the Spring Rolls at My Own Cafe are classic in providing comfort with their vegetable stuffing and crunchy exterior.

I was recommended to dip the spring rolls in the laksa gravy for a greatly yummy bite.

The cafe also serves other items like fresh fruit juices and Penang White Coffee.

Worth noticing is that while the menu at My Own Cafe has its limitations, the quality and flavour are homely, and the prices are pocket-friendly considering quite a touristy area.
