[Penang] Green House Prawn Mee Corner has long been a local favourite, treating those in the know-how to delectable Prawn Mee and Loh Mee for over three decades.

During the last trip to Penang, I found out there are two outlets: Green House Prawn Mee & Loh Mee at 133A Jalan Burma, and Restoran Old Green House further down the road at 223 Jalan Burma.

Green House Prawn Mee & Loh Mee has also received a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

I dined at Restoran Old Green House, which was more like an old-style coffeeshop with super rustic vibes.

Dining here was a trip down memory lane to a casual street-side place, living in the past in terms of its look and feel.

Not surprisingly, the food here pleases the palate in such a fashion that it evoked nostalgia.

A much-loved Penang speciality, the Hokkien Prawn Mee (RM7 for small) was an aromatic noodle soup with a memorable taste.

Note that in Penang, their “Hokkien Mee” is a beloved prawn noodle soup dish; while in Singapore it is the fried version.

Preparing the dish at Green House involves simmering the broth, made using prawn shells and pork bones, for hours to extract every bit of flavour possible.

The noodles, typically a mix of yellow noodles and rice vermicelli, are served in this flavourful broth, accompanied by prawns, pork slices, boiled eggs.

There are also crispy fried shallots and a spicy sambal that added an extra kick to the dish.

Apparently, reviews have been fairly mixed, but I enjoyed the soup for its rich and mildly sweet prawn flavour.

Loh Mee stands in contrast to the Prawn Mee due to its thick and dark gravy.

The secret of this robust preparation lies in a special blend comprising soy sauce, five-spice powder, and an array of seasonings, making it strikingly savoury in taste.

The noodles came with a range of ingredients, from roast pork and fish cake to egg, drizzled with the gravy.

For a try, I had the “Cintan” egg noodles.

I thought that the Loh Mee was more average comparatively, and would recommend the Hokkien Mee if you have only space for one.

A surprising feature of Green House is that they allow you to mix the Prawn Mee with Loh Mee, which balances out the broths. Perhaps next time I would try this.
