[Osaka] Kani Doraku かに道楽 is an iconic crab restaurant that has been around for more than 50 years, with several locations across Japan, easily identified by its iconic giant animated crab billboard.

The popular crab-specialty restaurant is known for its oishii crab dishes, made using fresh and high-quality ingredients.

The main restaurant Dotombori Honten at Osaka is the birthplace of Kani Doraku, so perhaps you can make it a point to visit there.

Especially when the Dotonbori area of Osaka is known for its vibrant nightlife and bustling streets.

It is a couple of minutes’ walk from Namba station on subway.

However, in the event you cannot make a reservation there (or it is too full), then there are a couple of other outlets along the main Dotonbori stretch.

The large, illuminated crab sign can be seen from a distance – you won’t miss it.

As it is quite a must-visit popular destination for tourists and locals alike, advance booking is highly recommended to cut down on waiting time.

This 332-seater 70-table establishment has 11 private rooms, the largest of which can fit up to 20 persons.

The restaurant offers a wide variety of crab dishes, including steamed crab, grilled crab, and crab hot pot, as well as a selection of other seafood dishes such as sushi and sashimi.

They also have Crab Meat Tempura and Crab Cream Croquette which are all prepared using Kani Doraku’s signature recipes.

The must-try signature dish is Kani Suki (JPY8,000). There are also more extravagant sets at JPY9,000 and JPY11,000 (with tax included is about JPY12,100).

The basic set includes an appetiser, raw snow crab leg, boiled crab, Japanese pickled vegetables, rice porridge and dessert of Vanilla ice cream with green tea sauce.

This crab hot pot features a homemade Suki broth based on salt water, full-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel and lingering white soy sauce flavour.

The broth gets more flavourful as the crab and vegetable are boiled within, and you can savour the ingredients with a variety of dipping sauces, such as ponzu (citrus-based sauce) and goma-dare (sesame sauce).

The best part to me was the “Zosui”, in which rice is added to the broth towards the end of the meal to cook up bowls of comforting porridge.

You can just imagine the nourishing, sweet flavours that go inside it.

If you love crab legs, go for the Kani Shabu that feature easy-to-eat crab legs minus the shell ready for dipping in sauce.

Daily Lunch Specials are also available, including Boiled Crab, Snow Crab Legs (raw), Steamed Egg Custard with Crab, Snow Crab (grilled), Roasted Crab Butter on the Shell, Snow Crab (Tempura; deep fried), Crab Sushi, Japanese Soup, and Fruit.

For the ultimate crab experience, you can order their multi-course Crab Kaiseki with starts from JPY7,000.

In addition to its delicious food, Kani Doraku is also known for its charming and welcoming atmosphere, friendly and attentive service.

So put this in your food itinerary somewhere, if you do visit Dotombori in Osaka.
