[Beijing] The capital city of China has announced its inaugural Michelin star guide, but not without its fair share of controversy.
Xin Rong Ji 新荣记 which specialises in Taizhou cuisine using seafood and fish from East China Sea, is awarded the only 3-Michelin stars. Interesting, its Shanghai outpost has 2 stars, and Hong Kong’s branch 1 star.
A couple of Peking Duck specialty restaurants have received 1 star, including Sheng Yong Xing 晟永兴 (Chaoyang), Da Dong大董 (Gongtixilu) and Da Dong 大董 (Dongsishitiao). Jing Yaa Tang 京雅堂 at The Opposite House which serves up pretty-good Peking Duck as well, is listed.
A surprise exclusion was TRB Temple Restaurant Beijing which was crowned “Best Fine Dining Restaurant in the world” by TripAdvisor in its annual Travelers’ Choice Awards for Restaurants. I thought it would have been a shoo-in as well.
While there are a couple of old-school Beijing restaurants that made the cut, there are many other notable exclusions. Only 15 Bib Gourmand places in a big city like Beijing?
