[Bangkok] Nhong Rim Klong is an exemplary success story, transitioning from humble beginnings to a Michelin-recommended eatery.

Originally starting as a street food stall next to a canal at Ekkamai, it was frequently visited by Thai locals and has since grown to become more established.

Specialising in wok-fried dishes using fresh seafood, they also whip up hearty Thai representative dishes.

These include Stir-fried Basil Pork (THB160, SGD6.20), Stir-fried Cabbage in Fish Sauce (THB150, SGD5.80) and Seafood Glass Noodle (THB240, SGD9.30).

Not forgetting the usage of decadent chunky crabmeat to cook dishes like Crabmeat Omelette (THB620, SGD23.80), Crabmeat Fried Rice (THB430, SGD16.50) and Stir-fried Crabmeat with Curry (THB510, SGD19.60)

Being at the right place and right time gave them the social media exposure which propelled them to fame.

First, its fuss-free street food vibes and “authenticity” of located next to a canal makes people to want to “experience” dining like a local.

The success of Michelin-starred Raan Jay Fai probably helped.

Nhong Rim Klong sells similar crab dishes and by word-of-mouth, naturally became the more accessible alternative.

Fast forward a few years, they have now shifted to a shophouse with no-frills dining space.

They have also gained Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition since 2022.

Prices has also gone up, but still good value for its generous portion size.

I had the Soft Cooked Crab with Omelette (THB430, SGD$16.50) which came in more of like stir-fried saucy scrambled eggs with crab meat chunks.

The flavours were slightly mellowed with minimal seasoning, and I could taste the natural sweet umami-ness of the crab meat complemented with creamy egg flavour.

Special mention to their accompanying seafood dipping sauce which added hints of tanginess and spiciness to the overall taste profile.

For those prefer stronger flavour, the Stir-fried Spicy Chilli Sauce with Crab and Vegetables (THB510, SGD19.60) could probably satiate your taste buds.

Lightly imbued with wok flavour, this dish left a greater impression with their savoury-spicy sauce.

It was further elevated with crab meat sweetness and fresh earthy notes from a mix of vegetables such as Thai green aubergines, long beans and holy basil leaves.

Another crowd-pleaser was the Fried Mantis Shrimp with Garlic (THB450, SGD17.30), which had fresh deshelled mantis shrimp topped with tons of fried crispy garlic bits as an addictive appetiser.

My ideal kind of shrimp as long as it is deshelled.

Their Creamy Spicy Seafood Tom Yum Soup (THB280, SGD10.80) probably one of the more enjoyable ones I had.

Creamy rich and luscious, its aromatic broth boasted a symphony of fiery and sourness characterised by bird’s eye chilli, lemongrass, galangal and kaffir leaves.

Further loaded with shrimp and squid for the fresh oceanic aroma.

Their food portion are generally huge, so would it be better to come in bigger groups to share the calories.
