[Bangkok] The best street food are often said to be found in the back alley.

Which is the case of Guay Tiew Kua Gai Suanmali, or some refers it as Kuay Teow Kua Gai Nai Hong, famous for their crispy flat rice noodles with chicken.

Located around 10 minutes away from reputable Yaowarat eateries such as Nai Mong Hoi Thod, Nai Ek Roll Noodle and Lhong Tou Café, this area is where a few of the Kuay Teow Gua Gai stalls reside.

The other known store which sells similar dishes is probably Ann Guay Tiew Kua Gai, which is located along the main road with a proper shopfront.

Ironically, Suanmali is in the back alley just behind Ann’s shopfront; I literally tread past Ann’s kitchen at the back alley to locate the place.

To make things more confusing, their cooking stations were placed side by side. I initially passed by the whole stretch assuming it belongs to Ann without even noticing.

It is the stall at a perpendicular junction of the back alley.

Look out for the makeshift table seatings and the wall menu with Michelin Bib Gourmand, and you will be at the right place.

The wall menu is written in full Thai, but you can approach the auntie helming the wok and she has an English version.

Basically, they sell Flat Rice Noodles aka Kuay Teow with Chicken, available in wok-fried and soup version at only 50 THB (SGD1.93).

Since its an “open-kitchen” concept, you can then witness how the auntie swiftly toss the rice noodles and chicken chunks over high charcoal flame which infuses smoky wok hey into the dish.

As a final touch, she would allow the noodles to “pan-fry’ a little to give that crusty golden exterior.

There is the option of going with fully cooked or runny eggs, I would say the crown jewel goes to the latter.

You get taste texture of smooth flat rice noodles with occasional bites of crispy edges, mixed in with creamy egg yolk which coats the surface for a delightful taste contrast.

There are also table condiments such as chopped yellow chillies, tomato sauce and chilli flakes which you can further customize the taste to your own preference.

Since I had spare stomach space, I also went for the Stir-fried Chicken on the menu, which essentially turns out to be a noodle-less version of the dish.

Basically, fully cooked golden omelette with stir-fried chicken chunks.

Flavourful and delicious, though slightly on the greasy side.

The amount of oil used in the dishes are probably a calorie bomb, but this has got to be the most well-spent 100 baht during the trip.
