[Melbourne] Market Lane Coffee is quite a well-loved Melbourne-based specialty coffee roaster and retailer. Quite a number of readers recommended me to try this.

They source, roast, and make their coffee in sustainable ways.

Fleur Studd and Jason Scheltus founded it in 2009 to address the shortage of fresh, in-season, traceable, high-quality coffee in Australia.

In 2010, Jenni Bryant joined the business and became a co-owner in 2019. Together, the trio leads a team of talented, passionate, and friendly baristas.

Their first shop and roastery was set in bustling Prahran Market.

You may want to check out their roastery and HQ in Brunswick East and see their 45kg Probat roaster in action! Here they process the beans to bring out their exquisite characteristics.

After all, their coffees are produced by dedicated farmers committed to quality.

Since then, it has grown to several shops, each located in very special neighbourhoods in Melbourne.

The more convenient locations (at least to me) are at Queen Victoria Market (there are three outlets here) and opposite South Melbourne Market.

I visited the outlet at South Melbourne Market.

Don’t get lost but this Market Lane is not exactly IN South Melbourne Market. But it is very close by, just draw a road.

From the organics section, cross Coventry Street then find the dusky blue shopfront inspired by Rwandan coffee-washing stations.

Interiors, designed by Hearth Studio, feature a handsome French elm counter and elm indoor and outdoor seats.

Soft light globes and dusky blue tiles adorn the bar area to contrast the warmth of the wooden pieces.

Aside from coffee, this outlet offers a small selection of pastries and home-brewing equipment.

Seasonal blends and single origins roasted at the Prahran HQ are served as espresso drinks or pour over filter coffees.

You can customise your espresso drinks with either Schulz organic milk or Minor Figures oat milk.

If you enjoy complex flavours, go for their Pour Over Filter Coffees. Each aromatic cup represents a place, variety, processing style and producer.

For instance, La Maravilla Guatemala ($7.50) is a washed process type, with a syrupy mouthfeel of dried apricot and hazelnut flavours.

While Tarekech Werasa Ethiopia used natural process and has hints of apple, lime, and sweet floral finish.

Do try their Coffee Teas, like Iced Coffee Flower Spritz ($8) a Market Lane specialty. Hand-picked flowers of Bolivian coffee trees are served over ice with tonic water.

The result? Delightfully bubbly and tastes like peach, citrus, and jasmine.
