[Penang] What’s a trip to Penang without some Chay Koay Teow?

The street food dish of Penang Char Koay Teow consists of flat rice noodles stir-fried in a wok with soy sauce, chili sauce, and a combination of ingredients like prawns, hum (blood cockles), bean sprouts, chives, and eggs.

Some versions also include Chinese lap cheong (sausage) and fishcake.

As for the top Char Koay Teow stalls in Penang, these include Siam Road Charcoal Char Kuey Teow, Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow, Tiger Char Koay Teow (Lebuh Carnarvon), Ah Leng Char Koay Teow, and Sister’s Char Koay Teow (Macalister Road).

Penang Road Famous Jin Kor Char Kuey Teow 槟榔律驰名仁哥炒粿条found within Joo Hooi Café was recently listed with a Bib Gourmand.

It is situated next to the famous Penang Road Famous Teochew Cendol and nearby Penang Road Famous Laksa – both popular spots for tourists.

With a history spanning over 40 years, the stall was initially operated by a husband-wife duo (Husband is called “Jin Kor” or Brother Jin). But due to the husband’s ill health, the wife handles the wok now.

Based on online reviews: while some visitors find the Char Kuey Teow satisfactory, others consider it average, suggesting that the experience might vary.

You can request for a No Egg (RM7.50), Chicken Egg (RM8.50), or Duck Egg (RM9.50) version.

Each serving is fried to order, ensuring that every plate is as fresh and savoury as possible, with the much-coveted ‘wok hei’.

The rice noodles had a soft, springy texture, and I liked the crunchiness from the aromatic crispy pork lard.

I did find that the flavours could have been more infused into the noodles, so some people may find this plate lacking of a distinctive factor overall.

Still a not bad plate good to try if you are around the area.

  1. The more you publicist about certain chosen Char Kuey Teow stalls in Penang, the more you sre side-lining or not helping the many other Char Keaw Teaw (the correct spelling i think) stalls, traders on this island. Especially the cutthroat Char Keaw Teaw man on Lorong Selamat off Burmah Road, Georgetown. This guy making hell of fortune since years ago over-charging his customers between RM10 – RM 12 a plate of Char Keaw Teaw mainly for people who can afford. Rumoured some of he’s customers are Singaporeans. Maybe he converts S$3 -S$4 per plate which is laughable to them because you can never that price in Singapore!
Since he is over charging that kind of price than most Char Keaw Teaw stalls in Penang rocket their price some maybe 5 – 7 years ago. Even the Char Keaw Teaw black mix-sauce price about RM11 – RM15..how super redicolous is that? There are many nice delicious Char Keaw Teaw I’ve tasted before as less exorbitant expensive price like RM5.50-RM6.50 per plate. I just stop eating them much in protest unless yhe genuinely priced ones. It is advisable to fellow Malaysians, support only towards wherever whenever that low reasonable price is. Not only for Char Keaw Teaw, this buying power MUST applies to traders who concerned about inflating the economy crisis with canmot make sense rocket high living cost. For comparison reasons which I’m trying not to, the standard of living cost here in Malaysia is by far higher than places in Europe for example. There are low medium and high about prices in buying power. Not here especially in KL, Penang,Johor etc do not telle…Low wages super high living cost. We are NOT an expansive country or high-income nation but we are behaving like one. Total incorrect sense. So to help each other in win-win approach, support only traders who support you and understands the mechanism of inflation. They help you to help them. The more you glamourise this high-end sellers the more you are not helping the low-end traders. It is good for everone in general.
Soon the world would face FoodWar.
