[Penang] Ask what’s the most famous dessert in Penang, and it is most probably Penang Road Famous TeoChew Chendul 槟城槟榔律驰名潮州煎蕊.

Some of the other famous Chendul around Penang include Batu Lanchang Tony Ais Kacang, Ais Tingkap (Lebuh Tamil), BM Best Cendol (Jalan Danby), and Kulim Road Best Cendol.

There are several stores dotted around Malaysia, and Penang Road Famous TeoChew Chendul at the roadside stall along Lebuh Keng Kwee remains one of the most popular.

The history can be traced back to 1936, when the founder Mr Tan Teik Fuang’s dedication to preparing each bowl while providing friendly service quickly made the stall a local favourite.

As the business flourished, it became a family affair, with his children joining in to help and strengthen the brand.

They also started offering other Penang favourites, such as Assam laksa and Rojak (a lot more subsequently), which along with their Chendul, became known as the “Penang Trio”.

Do you know there used to be a café concept in Singapore? But that unfortunately closed a few years back.

I made my way to the original location at Lebuh Keng Kwee, a small road just off Jalan Penang.

It looked about the same as how it was many years back, except that prices have increased and they now serve in a disposable bowl.

Note that there are no tables or chairs for dining; customers usually stand by the roadside to enjoy their dessert or opt for take-away.

However, you can dine in at Joo Hooi Café behind or a physical shop a short walk away, provided you order some food or drinks there.

The Chendul (RM4.50) is made from a mixture of shaved ice, coconut milk, and a sweet palm sugar syrup.

One of the key ingredients that set it apart are the green, pandan jelly noodles made from rice flour and pandan leaves, which were soft and chewy.

The two main components I liked were the sweetened and soft kidney beans, and base of rich Gula Melaka balanced by the light coconut milk.

However, I did think that the coconut milk component was slightly diluted, and could have been richer and more fragrant.

The stall still remains a popular spot for tourists wanting to try the famous Chendul, or those seeking memories.
