[Penang] The quirky-named Narrow Marrow is arguably amongst the hippest cafes in Penang.

Known for its artistic ambiance, it is situated in the heart of George Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Conceptualised and started by architect-designer Alvin Neoh and Jamie Oon, the space has a distressed décor, highlighted by colourful bohemian elements that give the café an eclectic quality.

It opens at 3pm though – considered late for coffee, so keep that in mind.

There are two different ‘phases’, depending on what time you head down.

During the day, you can’t help but notice the eccentricities like the old-fashioned wood and metal tables and stools to sit on, wall shelves filled with plants and oddities, the skylight, and the high ceiling with beams.

After sundown, colourful lights in different areas set the mood for an intimate and fun evening.

The café frequently hosts events such as art exhibitions, live music performances, and poetry readings, making it a hub for Penang’s creative community.

Narrow Marrow also draws in a large crowd daily, primarily because of their culinary and drink offerings.

Not to miss at Narrow Marrow is the boozy Tiramisus, one of the best you will find in all of Penang.

Go for the Espresso Kahlua Tiramisu (RM24.00), which is light, bitter, and sweet, with a noticeable taste of liquor that surprisingly doesn’t overpower the rest of the ingredients.

Should you want a less indulgent dessert, they have yummy cakes like the Salted Gula Melaka Baked Cheese (RM24.00) and the Coconut Clitoria Baked Cheese Cake (RM24.00).

However, the pricing of some items, like the cakes, can be considered high by Penang standards.

The diversity here is quite impressive. You can get a Dirty Chai (RM24.00), Batch Brew (black drip coffee), Matcha Latte, Yogurt Smoothie, and Nutmeg Soda with house-brewed nutmeg syrup.

Interesting, I saw they use the “Throwback” coffee blend (dark chocolate, caramel, hazelnut) from PPP Coffee – a well-loved coffee roaster brand from Singapore.

Then they also have beer as well as creations made with Toddy, a coconut palm wine that has a tropical taste.

Some reviews did point out that the café seems to cater to a specific trend and look, and certain aspects may not appeal to everyone.

Narrow Marrow seems to hold a special place in Penang’s café scene, especially for those looking for a quirky, Instagram-worthy experience.
