Odette from Singapore is crowned Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant 2020. This is the 2nd time the fine dining restaurant by Chef by Chef Julien Royer came up tops.
The awards ceremony which was supposed a 3-day event at Saga, Japan, went for a live-steaming format due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Singapore is also represented by Burnt Ends (No.5), Les Amis (No.11), JAAN (No.21), Zen (No.28 – NEW entry) Nouri (No. 39), Corner House (No.42) and Nouri, Singapore (No. 50).
Waku Ghin which had been on the list since the beginning, is unplaced this year.
From observations, most of the restaurants remain more or less the same, though there are certain big drops.
Nahm in Bangkok, Thailand (previous year No.22) which was once crowned Number 1 is left unplaced. A huge reason would be because Chef David Thompson has left the restaurant, and his head chef role was taken over by Suraja Ruangnukulkit.
One of Macau’s top restaurant Jade Dragon (previous year No.27) is also not found in the Top 50; while Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, Shanghai (previous year No.6) takes a big fall to No.41.
With the COVID-19 situation disrupting travels and the F&B industry, several of the listed restaurants has taken a big hit, especially those in countries with border restrictions. Hope that the culinary teams can remain strong, and diners to continue supporting their favourite restaurants once the situation turns for the better.

How Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list is compiled
The list is created from the votes of the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of over 300 leaders in the restaurant industry across Asia, each selected for their expert opinion of Asia’s restaurant scene.
The panel in each region is made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘gastronomes’. Members list their choices in order of preference, based on their best restaurant experiences of the previous 18 months. There is no pre-determined check-list of criteria, but there are strict voting rules.
