Sushi Masato is one of the first Omakase-style Japanese restaurants in Bangkok and a top choice for sushi in Thailand.

It runs as an exclusive traditional omakase sushi bar in one of the bustling districts in Bangkok.

A Japan native, Chef Masato Shimizu opened Sushi Masato in 2015 after successful sushi ventures in Tokyo and New York.

As head chef at Jewel Bako, he became the youngest chef at 29 to win a Michelin star. In 2006, he teamed up with Marco Moreira to open 15 East Restaurant which was awarded one Michelin Star.

It was after marrying his Thai Japanese wife when he moved to Bangkok and open Sushi Masato. Once again, Chef Masato is awarded one star in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2021.

The restaurant is also listed as one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, ranked at No. 29.

The Omakase is priced at 4000 THB (SGD154), with a Premium Omakase at 6000 THB (SGD231).

Some notes in terms of reservations: The reservations are released on a month-by-month basis. At 00:00hrs (Bangkok timing) every 15th of the month, seats will be released for booking of the later month.

For example: For reservation in June, you can make a reservation from May 15th at 00:00hrs onwards. Do remember that the timing is for Bangkok, so adjust your ‘stay-awake-to-book’ alarm accordingly. (For Singapore, it is 1AM. Yes, I stayed awake to book this, and all reservations were gone in a matter of minutes.)

The restaurant requires a deposit of 2,000 THB per person in order to secure the reservation. AMEX is not accepted.

Also note that the first floor counter taken care by Chef Masato Shimizu and Chef Kenichi Kanno while the third floor counter is taken care by Chef Satohiro Kurokawa.

However, all ingredients are the same and have been prepared the same way.

Chef Masato takes the freshest quality seasonal ingredients and transforms them into an extraordinary work of art.

He has perfected his red-vinegared rice, paying close attention to temperature as well as resting time.

Yet his passion goes beyond the food and takes care of every little detail. He ensures customers receive an elegant yet warm, intimate, and best possible Japanese-style hospitality.

Savour a combination of Edo Mae and New York Mae styles of sushi.

Omakase courses served are strictly Edo style. Chef Masato himself serves these in an intimate counter.

Sushi Masato

Although menu changes seasonally, there are well-loved items that have become must-have staples – Ankimo (slow-cooked monkfish liver) and Anago (seawater eel).

Depending on the seasons, you may encounter special toppings like Sawara (Spanish mackerel), which is carefully smoked at the restaurant, or Katsuo (Bonito) and Tai (Sea Bream), which are at their peak in spring.

Definitely a restaurant worth exploring if you are a fan of Japanese Omakase in Bangkok. That’s if you can snag a reservation.
