For the first time in Michelin history, a ‘Street Food’ section has been added to the Hong Kong Michelin Star guide. (Read: Hong Kong Michelin Guide 2016)
Many eyebrows raised, from the inclusion of this component (since Michelin has always been tied with fine-dining) and the choices of the 23 stalls particularly Butchers Club which may not be technically considered ‘street food’.
Hong Kong’s Michelin guide has always been in the centre of debate, issues including Tim Ho Wan repeatedly awarded the one-star, and when newer or less renowned restaurants have been given 2 or 3-stars.
I see this as a move for the guide to stay relevant and inclusive, apparent in the assortment from Hong Kong local snacks and desserts, to Thai, Indonesian, Korean food establishments to a baked potato shop and café selling lava cakes.
