[Hong Kong] Goodbye Yung Kee 鏞鏞. The Chinese restaurant at Central Hong Kong famous for its roast goose, once awarded the Michelin star, is set to face closure.

The highest court has rejected a request to extend the liquidation deadline by the family, and the consequence is that a liquidator will take over to find buyers for both the restaurant and the iconic building it occupies on Wellington Street.

Representatives of Kam Kin-sing (the late eldest son of founder Kam Shui-fai), and second son Kam Kwan-lai have failed to reach an agreement after many rounds of negotiation.

The Chinese restaurant which had humble beginnings as a dai pai dong on Kwong Yuen West, rose to fame for its roast goose and could sell as many as 300 whole birds per day.

Yung Kee was once named the Top 15 Restaurants in the World by Fortune Magazine, Asia’s Top 20 Restaurants by Miele Guide, and held one Michelin Guide in 2009. But that didn’t last long.

Like a TVB Hong Kong family drama, a family dispute over money and relationships caused much conflicts and eventual lowering standards of the restaurant.

It lost its star, and many of its supporters.

.

I remember the good old days where some would actually bother to ta-bao back the roast all the way from Hong Kong, and there were long queues and waiting times for the succulent ducks with crispy glossy skin. And I was a huge fan of their preserved eggs, which creamy and tasty, were like none other ever tried.

For die-hard fans, the restaurant will still be around as liquidation is likely to take years.

Although Yung Kee will be closed, it is sad to say that that original good taste has been actually lost for good way back ago.
