When it comes to popular supper spots in Singapore, Fei Fei Wanton Mee 飛飛雲吞麵 at Joo Chiat used to be one of them as it is opened 24 hours a day.

Do not go searching for Fei Fei at its old location of 72 Joo Chiat Place, as the shop is moving further down the road at 45 Joo Chiat Place.

The story of Fei Fei Wanton Mee began in the 1940s; and there were some family divisions somewhere down that history.

Note: Not to be confused with Fei Fei Roasted Noodle 肥肥烧腊云吞面 at Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre – they are two different brands.

It is good that they chose to move as the previous kopitiam the stall was at looked slightly run down, and didn’t look like the best environment to dine at.

On the menu is the signature of Wanton Noodles ($6), though they have also expanded to include Chicken Cutlet Noodles ($8), Meat Ball Noodles ($8), Chicken Feet Noodles ($7), to Minced Pork Noodles ($6).

Customers can also find side dishes of Yong Tau Fu, Fried Chicken Drumstick, Prawn Roll, Fried Dumplings, to Braised Chicken Feet.

The sides are priced from $6 to $9, slightly pricier after the move.

To be honest, I haven’t had Fei Fei Wanton Mee in a while; and the presentation and taste differed quite a bit from some years back (used to be a white bowl with a spoonful of chilli sauce).

I guess the Wanton Noodles faced with some consistency issues, thus the very mixed reviews online.

The thin, chewy egg noodles would be its selling point, along with the punchy chilli sauce. I did remember the noodles to be a paler colour with a more enjoyable bite.

As for the char siew (barbecued pork), it was nothing much to shout about.

At the end of the day, it was the spicy condiment made from a blend of chili peppers, garlic, vinegar, and other spices, that added a unique kick to the dish.

Hope that the new shop move would help them get their momentum back.
