Char Restaurant, a char siew restaurant gem in Jalan Besar, is drawing its curtains after being around for nearly ten years.

Its last day of operations will be 26 November 2023.

What made Char stand out wasn’t just its different approach to Cantonese cuisine but the passion and vision of its founders – two British brothers who ventured to redefine the Cantonese Roast meat landscape in Singapore.

It was this innovative spirit that earned them the Michelin Plate from 2016 to 2018.

For many, a visit to Char wasn’t complete without indulging in their signature dishes.

Their Char Siew ($28 for 300g) is known for the balance of flavours, the tender meat, and special sauce that danced between sweet and salty.

All crowned with stickiness that lingered.

But that’s not all. The Crispy Roast Pork Belly ($28 for 300g), with its crackling, became a favourite for many.

Marinated with a blend of Chinese and Western herbs, its high-heat roasting technique gave the meat its unique flavour and texture.

Not to be overshadowed, the Jasmine Roast Duck ($15.40 onwards) was Char’s take on the traditional Cantonese roast.

By infusing jasmine tea into the roasting process, they achieved a tender meat with a hint of floral taste, rounded off with crispy skin.

But as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.”

While Char Restaurant may be closing its doors on 26th November 2023, the team behind Char hints at a possible return, either in Singapore or abroad.

Until then, the legacy of Char remains in the stories shared over meals and the lingering taste of its dishes.
