“My curry nice or not? How did you hear about us?”

Auntie was super friendly when she found out it was the first time my friend had tried her Curry Chicken Noodles.

She proudly mentioned that her stall was featured in “City Beat” (that sounds like ions ago), and host Bryan Wong would be covering their food in “Old Taste Detective” again.

Da Po Hainanese Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodle 大坡海南鸡饭-咖哩鸡面 at Golden Mile Food Centre offers these two local dishes, though I was more enticed to try the latter as it is less commonly seen around nowadays.

The stall has also recently been included in the Michelin Guide Singapore, joining Ah Heng Chicken Curry Bee Hoon Mee, Fu Hai Curry Chicken Noodles, and Hock Hai (Hong Lim) Curry Chicken Noodle on the list.

It seems like the Michelin inspectors do love Curry Chicken Noodles.

The Curry Chicken Noodles ($5, $6, $7) came with big pieces of poached chicken, soft potatoes, fishcake slices, tau pok, soft bean sprouts, and the best thing… pig’s skin.

They were indeed generous with the ingredients.

The curry gravy which was made with fresh coconut milk, didn’t taste overly greasy and was quite ‘drinkable’ – you could just finish the entire bowl.

I would say it was just balanced, and not too rich or lemak. Mix in some of the sambal chilli to add in more spice and flavours.

The poached chicken was tender and quite moist; while my favourite parts were the tau pok (beancurd puffs) and pig skin which would absorb the rich curry gravy.

I decided to try the Hainanese Chicken Rice ($4, $5, $6) as well this time, in which the hawker recommended the steamed over the roasted.

While Da Po is not considered super well-known in the Chicken Rice field, I was therefore surprised of the quality of the chicken which was tender and succulent.

The fragrant rice cooked with chicken stock and aromatics was flavourful, except that some may prefer a fluffier version.

As for the chilli sauce, it was more on the sweeter than spicier side.

Matched with the homely-tasting soup, this was definitely a plate of Hainanese Chicken Rice worth the support.
