This is perhaps one of the over-looked hawker stalls located at Tiong Bahru Food Centre, because it does not sell the conventional local hawker food.

How many of you have eaten a “Tow Kwar Pop” 豆亁薄 before?

One of the diminishing hawker foods you would find in Singapore, the ‘Tow Kwar Pop’ is a crispy and savory snack made with fried bean curd skin and stuffed with a mixture of shredded cucumber and other vegetables.

The dish is usually served with a sweet and savory dipping sauce made with prawn paste, sugar, and chilli.

The Tiong Bahru stall Tow Kwar Pop 豆亁薄 which was founded in 1965 (same age as Singapore), has recently been included in the Singapore Michelin Guide 2023.

You can get these as a Rojak Set priced at $4 or $5 (no ala carte orders).

Customers can also add on tow pok (beancurd) ($1), You Tiao ($1), and extra sauce ($3).

These are grilled on charcoal upon order, filled with cucumber and beansprouts, and served with cool turnip and pineapple slices together.

I loved it for the golden crispy texture after the ‘packets’ are grilled, while the inside was packed with crunchy and refreshing vegetables for that contrast.

This dish also comes served as a Rojak with a mix of fruits and vegetables, such as pineapple, cucumber, and jicama.

The winning ingredient is the sweet and spicy prawn paste sauce poured over, with a dash of peanut.

As if it is not enough, there is additional rojak and chilli sauce provided for further dips.

An old-school and hard-to-find hawker dish deserving of support.
