Min Jiang Kueh, also known as “Apam Balik” or oat pancakes, is a childhood snack that used to be easily found in street stalls all over.

The batter is made of flour, sugar, and yeast, which is then cooked on a griddle until it becomes crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

It is typically filled with crushed peanuts, sugar, or other fanciful ingredients in recent times.

These days, hawker stalls are where the snack hides.

One of them can be found at the popular Old Airport Road Food Centre.

Aunty Oats Pancake is the name; and I think this might be the first Min Jiang Kueh stall to ever go on the recommended Singapore Michelin Guide.

While the signboard of Aunty Oats Pancake is slightly faded, the stall remains bright and lively.

Ready-made pancakes are laid out aesthetically in the display. If they run out, pancakes are made quickly in a large pan at the back.

Quite a number of choices are available. The classics are Red Bean, Coconut and Peanut, at $1.20 per pancake.

The more premium fillings are Chocolate, Cheese, Lotus Paste, Pandan, Salted Red Bean, and Coffee, at $1.40 each.

Some of the flavours sport a signature half-moon shape with creased edges – this appeared to be the more popular version.

The thinner outer portions were slightly crispy, while the main layer was soft and fluffy.

I had a peanut and did wish the fillings were more plentiful and fragrant.

The more traditional look comes in rectangular slices, with the chewy dough sweetened by whatever filling you opt for.

These Oat Pancakes are a great munch at any time of the day, although Aunty Oats Pancake closes shop by 4pm or when sold out.
