Tai Seng Fish Soup? Thai Seng Fish Soup?

The Michelin inspectors recently awarded Tai Seng Fish Soup 泰成魚湯 at Taman Jurong Food Centre a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

There were people who congratulated the other stall. Understandably because some of the Michelin publicity posters don’t include addresses.

You see, there is also the well-loved and popular Thai Seng Fish Soup at 3026 Ubi Rd 1.

To add more to the confusion: Thai Seng Fish Soup at Ubi used to be called “Tai Seng Fish Soup” (so some food reviews may retain the old name).

While Thai Seng Fish Soup at Ubi was awarded a “Foodie’s Choice Award for Best Sliced Fish Soup” by Mediacorp CLASS 95, Tai Seng Fish Soup’s outlet at Clementi hung a banner with the indication they won it.

Which is better – it’s up to their fans, but Thai Seng Fish Soup looks like the more commonly and better reviewed stall online.

Anyway, with some of the clarifications done, the Bib Gourmand Tai Seng Fish Soup at Taman Jurong Food Centre also has outlets at 431 Clementi Ave 3 and Ghim Moh Food Centre.

They are a family business currently on their third-generation owners, who is the grandson of the original owner.

It is a long way to come since it started over fifty years ago as a street stall, and the stall is said to maintain the practice of making everything from scratch.

Four types of fish soup are sold here: Sliced Fish Soup ($5), Fried Fish Soup ($5), Mixed Fish Soup ($6), and Fish Head Soup ($5). Economical for what it is, but note that price differs depending on outlet.

Customers can also add on Fried Egg, Vegetables, Fish Roe, Beancurd and more Fish slices.

Start with the Sliced Fish Soup, filled with sliced fish, tofu, fried egg floss, tomato, and cabbage. If you want to feel fuller, add $2 extra for more fish.

The soup was considered flavourful, towards the sweet side.

Dip the fish in a bit of that chilli sauce for more oomph.

For a more shiok and more unhealthy choice, ask for the Fried Fish soup. The batter, soaked with fish soup, gives a different kind of kick with every bite.

Between the two, I preferred the Sliced Fish better to appreciate the natural flavours of the fish better, and the battered fish didn’t look golden-brown or taste crispy enough.

Of course, the Mixed Fish Soup is the best of both worlds.

Overall, I thought that the winning element was the fried egg floss which gave the dish a different texture and dimension.
