Tucked away in the bustling Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre is a popular hawker gem Hup Hong Chicken Rice 合豐记鸡饭.

The eager queue that builds up in front of the chicken rice stall #01-51 is an almost guaranteed sight.

Perhaps a lot has to do with its price.

A plate of Chicken Rice starts from $3.50 ($15 for half chicken, $30 for whole), and they also serve up Char Siew Rice ($3.50), Roast Pork Rice ($3.50) – which is really affordable in today’s context.

The stall has also been recently included in the Singapore Michelin Guide as a recommended stall. It did not win the Bib Gourmand though.

On my visit, though the queue is long, it moves reasonably.

I opted for the roasted variant. Although it could have been more tender, the flavours were there, and I couldn’t fault it much for its price.

Those looking to elevate their meal can add Char Siew or Roast Pork, a welcome option for pork lovers.

However, I thought that the Sio Bak was just okay, and could fare better with more crunchiness on the outer layer.

The chicken rice itself is conscientiously prepared and was not too oily, though could have been more fluffy and flavourful.

The chicken rice chilli was a pleasant surprise, being spicy with some citrusy notes without overwhelming the taste buds.

The meal was further complemented by a simple but decent cabbage soup. Though unpretentious, it provided comfort and balance.
