[Phuket] If you are in the heart of Phuket town, and looking for a local breakfast dish that is delicious and inexpensive, then you should definitely try Roti Taew Nam โรตีแถวนํ้า.

Other than being very popular with both the locals and tourists, the humble eatery has also been included in the Michelin Guide Thailand.

Located in the heart of Phuket Town on Thepkrasatree Road, Roti Taew Nam is nestled between crossroad junctions of Dibuk and Thalang Roads.

Roti Canai (we call it Roti Prata in Singapore) is a type of flatbread made from a simple dough stretched and folded repeatedly. Like a puff pastry, it also has multiple layers.

The Michelin inspectors described the chefs as those “who shapes, fries, taps and cuts faster than the eye can see”.

Compared to other Roti Shops in Thailand, this one leans toward savoury Rotis.

Locals and tourists queuing up is a regular sight here as they anticipate a satisfying meal of crispy yet fluffy Rotis.

While service here is speedy and efficient, do be prepared to wait especially during peak hours.

If you are looking for Roti, on the menu are Plain Roti (20 THB for 2 pcs), Egg Roti (20 THB), Banana and Egg Roti (30 THB).

Also in the menu are Breakfast Set (40 THB), French Toast (25 THB), Chicken Sausages (30 THB) and Soft-Boiled Eggs (20 THB).

What is really special is that the Rotis are cooked on a hot griddle over charcoal, which imparts a toasty taste and flavour.

Watch how they are deftly flipped and cooked perfectly. Then they serve them hand shredded.

Let me tell you about the texture. The outside of the roti was crispy and flaky, while the inside was soft and chewy.

It had a perfect balance between crispy and soft. I would recommend adding a fried egg or two for more yolk protein in your plate.

You can also enjoy your Roti with Beef (50 THB), Chicken (50 THB), Fish (50 THB), Chicken Massaman (50 THB) or Beef Massaman Curry (50 THB).

Their signature roti with fried egg paired with fish curry is highly recommended. If you like your curry light, go for the Chicken Massaman curry.

The chicken drumstick used in the Massaman curry was really tender, and the potatoes were soft and melt-in-your-mouth.

What sets Massaman Curry apart from other Thai curries is its unique blend of flavours and its slightly sweeter taste.

The dish had only subtle heat, and it is not as spicy as some other Thai curries, making it a good choice for those who prefer milder flavours.

However, I did find the gravy on the watery side and would have preferred it to be richer and thicker.

An ideal communal breakfast spot since they open at 7am daily. You are guaranteed to get Rotis fresh as they make their dough daily.

If you are looking for affordably priced, quick, and satisfying breakfast in Phuket, Roti Taew Nam is one good source. Don’t forget to bring cash – they won’t accept cards.
