[Phuket] One Chun situated in the Old Town region of Phuket, is considered one of the most favoured dining spots known for its genuine and authentic Thai fare and nostalgic ambience.

Positioned on Thep Krasattri Road and located diagonally across from the Phuket Town Inn Hotel, the family-style restaurant boasts an extensive menu of traditional Thai cuisine and regional specialities.

Adding to the overall aura of the dining affair is the 19th-century building in which One Chun finds its residence.

There is an alluringly vintage (almost Peranakan) appeal to the setting, with the décor consisting of antique Chinese wooden furniture, colourful green, red, and white floor tiles, and architectural features that range from green-coloured door frames to beamed ceilings and brick walls.

Doused in traditionality, there is a sense of comfort one experiences here, as if dining at a friend or relative’s house.

Enhancing this atmosphere of familiarity is an array of showpieces such as old-world televisions, cinema projectors, radios, and clocks, which also serve as excellent conversation starters.

The menu at One Chun carries forth its characteristic traditional temperament, featuring an extensive selection of classic Thai dishes as well as those local to Phuket.

Recipes were passed down from one family member to another over three generations.

Can’t-miss signature dishes include the sensational Crab Meat Curry and Coconut Milk served with Rice Vermicelli (370 THB), and Phuket’s Style Steamed Pork Belly with Pepper and Garlic (265 THB).

Other must-haves include the Fried Fish with Fish Soup (65 THB for 100g), Thai Paste with Dried Shrimp and Garlic (180 THB), Stir-Fried Crab Meat with Lemon Sauce (350 THB), Orange Curry Soup with Seabass Fish (65 THB for 100g), and Fried Grill Pork with Chilli, Pepper and Garlic (165 THB).

The Crab Meat Curry with Coconut Milk and Rice Vermicelli is example of the exquisite cuisine offered at One Chun Café.

It was a delectable dish that blends the flavours of tender crab meat and creamy coconut milk.

Complex in its textures and flavours, the savoury curry has much depth, a hint of spiciness, and some sweetness from the huge chunks of crab meat.

Rice vermicelli is served on the side, which you can use to dip into the curry.

It was the rice vermicelli’s somewhat neutral taste that not only balanced the entire dish but also allows the curry to emerge as the main hero of the preparation.

Actually, if you can only pick ONE dish at One Chun, then I would say go straight for the Phuket’s Style Steamed Pork Belly with Pepper and Garlic (265 THB).

I must have eaten all sorts of braised Pork Belly in my life, especially being a Hokkien, and this ranked of one of my favourites ever. Maybe as good (if not better) than what my grandma used to cook. (Sorry, Ah-ma!)

The dish featured succulent pork belly that was cooked for 3.5 hours, which explained why it was so melt-in-the-mouth.

Marinated with a blend of spices and steamed to perfection, resulting in an incredibly tender and flavourful dish. The only thing that may worry some would be the thick layer of fats in between

The pepper and garlic seasoning added a bold and robust flavour that paired well with the luscious meat.

With its charming vintage décor and delectable food, this making it a must-visit spot for those who are willing to splurge on a good Thai meal in the heart of Phuket Town.
